Acer GD245HQ vs Dell U2311H

Thread Starter
Right now im torn between getting the GD245HQ for it's response time with little or no ghosting with 120hz and the U2311H(60hz) cause of the better colors you will get with it being an IPS monitor. I mostly play FPS games and want to know if I go with the U2311H is the performance hit going to be worth the better colors.

I asked a similar question before I bought my U2311h. None of the users here (myself included) can see ghosting when playing FPS on our U2311h monitors.

Some will argue go for the 120hz for "more fluid motion" and some will argue the IPS for better colors. There are detractors in both camps ("120hz makes no difference" and "why do you need an IPS for gaming") I couldn't justify ~350 dollars for an ugly TN panel and went with the Dell.

To reply to your actual question, there is no performance hit to speak of. Superior/similar input lag to the best TN panels and no ghosting.

Which FPS games?

BC2 and so are awfully slow and won't require a 120hz panel, but will look much nicer with an IPS

Games like Quake, unreal tournament, CSS in some cases, and so on will benefit from 120hz more than IPS

However, the decision is yours. More quality or more fluid motion?

how is the contrast ratio with IPS monitors? Hear it can be very bad sometimes. Which can make details pop less. I don't know are IPS monitors image quality that much better then TN monitors?

They are IPS monitors. They will have much better colors than TN panels. Details will always pop out less with TN panels.

The advertised contrast numbers are basically lies. You can't trust them. You should look at the panel itself.

I do think you would be more happier with IPS, since modern shooters on casual gameplay don't really benefit THAT much from 120hz, while they will look amazing with IPS

Yeah, what De-Zant said. The actual contrast ratio on the U2311h is one of the best that has been reviewed over at tftcentral. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2311h.htm Check it out.

Oh. Is the image quality that much superior? My TN panels look like turds sitting next to my IPS.

For some reason, people think that IPS has a ton of ghosting because of the response time. I see no lag at all with my U2410. I haven't tried 120hz, but I can tell you about IPS. The colors are really amazing. I actualy just had to move my computer out of my room for a few days, so I hooked it up to my big Vizio LED Tv in a different room. I saw that the colors are a lot more accurate, clear, and vivid on the IPS, than the Tn (which is the LED tv). You really notice it in games like Just Cause 2 where you have lots of blue's, red's, and green's. I would say that IPS is a lot better, in terms of colors, over a tn panel. Don't worry about ghosting, I haven't seen any yet. I would go down to a local computer store, and see if they have Ips or 120hz that you can see.

With your set up, you will easily be running games above 60FPS. 60Hz monitors cannot see more than 60FPS. 120Hz can run up to 120fps and after you've experienced it the difference is as big is 30FPS to 60FPS. And trust me, BC2 looks beast in 120FPS. League of Legends looked like a different level of smoothness compared to my brother's 60Hz right next to mines.

I have not tried a IPS monitor yet, but 120Hz is the right choice for me right now and the best upgrade I've done so far.

Yeah.. no. BFBC2 is much to slow to *need* (or indeed, get any real benefit from) 120 hz. It's not counterstrike.
