Help me build home media server

Hello,
I need your suggestions on how to build home media server.
I want to use Raid-1 at least for all information with 2Tb hdds.
Can you suggest me all needed hardware? Mobo, cpu, raid controller if needed. How to connect it with my pc and mac at home? I have Dlink dir 300 router for internet for now, will it be enough for sharing data between machines via wifi?
May be you have a links to the usefull how-to guides?
Anyway, I want to build a file-server, cause I think it will be cheaper and more usefull then buying a NAS. And I am open for suggestions.
Thanks a lot.

Specs wise for mobs and shizzle, I would say get a cheap bundle or a barebones setup,
Hell you can run it on a p4 and 256mb of ram lol,

I would suggest you get a pci Gigabit card 10/100/1000 so that the data dont bottle neck.

A raid controller will be needed if you dont have some sata ports on the mobo otherwise save the money.

For the dlink, does it supply gigabit connections otherwise the data might be sloow, or you could do what I did and buy a gigabit switch of ebay and run a connection from the router to the switch and connect it that way e.c.t.

But I would say your router will do the job for sharing it over the wifi.

and I would also suggest getting 5400rpm drives, as they run cooler, use less power, and last longer for some reason.

What media do you intend on streaming / making available? 720p? 1080p? Or no HD media?

What I really need - found a parts list, with balance between performance and price. I want to buy used parts if it will be available. But I don't really know what I should choose - which mobo/cpu bandle will be enough for my needs. It does not matter AMD or Intel. I want to use 8 sata hdds in Raid 1 (mirror, for safe data). May be I should choose other Raid mode? Please suggest.
Thanks.
