XFX HD6770 fiasco - Page 12

Thread Starter
There appears to be no support for the 6770 in the 11.4 drivers.

I see two possible scenarios.
1.) The HD6770 is being released to retail at some point in the future, but XFX and Best Buy jumped the gun by at least a month

2.) XFX/Best Buy are selling an OEM product as retail without AMD's authorization

Neither situation is good.

Lack of drivers is nothing to do with XFX..

Do XFX make drivers?

Just what I though

6770 is a re-branded 5770 and sold as OEM.

Driver support is and always has been AMD's responsibility NOT the vendors

just a thought. Could you have flashed it to a regular XFX 5770 bios? Just a thought...

Anyone home at AMD to answer the phones as of yet? Just curious.

Maybe, but it's easier to just return it and get the one already coming from Newegg.

No....

So he needs to think about what he's shouting his mouth over.

I've run never cards on drivers that were released before they hit retail and they've worked.

It's obviously a driver issue and thus is an AMD issue so why's he blaming XFX?

If the cards were created for the OEM market and have been sold in OEM machines then it's obvious that the card does have working drivers.
Not quite there....

Is there a way to hack in the vendor IDs and stuff to make the Catalysts work? I remember doing tricks like this to make Windows 95 take a Windows 98 modem driver set.

Maybe, but I shouldn't have to, and we've got a 5770 on the way anyway.

Pffffff..... you can't be serious. Use your braincells and re-read what you just wrote.

Do you think it's OK for XFX, or any other vendor for that matter, to put a card for sale at retail stores without assuring there are drivers for it ?

More, shouldn't the drivers come with the card ?!?!? In a driver CD, just like every other vendor ? Don't tell me, now people are obliged to have internet access to install a piece of hardware. Because that is what the CD that comes with the card does: it contains no drivers, instead an executable that directs you to the AMD site.

Of course XFX knew they couldn't sell the card YET, AMD didn't even give them drivers for retail now, because it's not supposed to be sold at retail, It's supposed to come pre-installed in OEM PC's. And since XFX doesn't make OEM PC's, they still weren't given the drivers, because the card is not supposed to come out at retail YET.

This is XFX's fault. They knowingly hurried the release of the card without AMD's authorization. The fact the card doesn't come with drivers but instead a CD with an executable that connects to the AMD site, is more than proof XFX screwed up. They knew there weren't any drivers, else they would have put them on the CD. Instead they throw the blame to AMD with that program that connects to the AMD site. And you fell for that.

The cards released on OEM and has working drivers so there's no reason why it shouldn't work.
