Terminal block for HDDs?

I have an old Dell Poweredge server I'm trying to get up and running, wanting to know if I could power about 8 or so IDE hard drives via a terminal block?

The server psu is 300w, and the only other devices its powering besides the motherboard is a CD drive and two fans, but it still only has one available molex connector. So it would be one molex through the block to the hard drives. Thanks.

So you just want to split the connection? Yeah sure, you can do that, provided the wire gauge can support that much current and your power supply has enough amperage.

Yeah that's what I figured, just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a problem pulling that much power through a single molex. Anyone know about how much amperage that would require anyhow? I tried to find average power consumption for a 7200rpm IDE drive, but didn't come up with anything.

My PSU appears to be rated13A on the 12v rail, 30A on 5v.

Check what the AWG of the molex wiring is.

18AWG can handle around 10A.
20AWG can handle around 7A.
22AWG can handle around 5A.

Shouldn't really be any smaller wire than that.

Not sure the exact amperage on 12V and 5V, but total wattage is around 10W max typically. So say 1-2A per drive...

18 should be plenty provided the actual PSU has enough power. And the drives will never go over 0.5A on normal use. When they are spinning like madmen, they might hit an 1A.
