What's a good card for playing HD movies on a 50"? - Page 3

If he ever plans to watch SD DVD's, he will need quality deinterlacing. A good GPU will come in handy there, unless he has good playback software which has "good" deinterlacing built in.

I can tell you, my old E6600 at stock 2.4Ghz could not handle 1080p Bluray software decoding/playback. Granted that is super old, and any new hardware should breeze through it.

I think its a good idea to get one of the newest Gen GPU's, in the lower end that have HDMI and full media bitstream capabilities. I think its better to have it when you need it then want it when you dont.

Make sure you read the GT 430 review I linked you but I think that's the one I would go with. Any of the cards on this page should do the job but I personally prefer Asus or EVGA if you don't mind the extra $10 or $15.

I have a laptop with a first-gen core i5 and I use HDMI out (GMA) for bluray rips to my tv, works just fine, never a lag. I use Windows media player classic - home cinema x64

You will be fine with onboard graphics or the dirt cheapest dedicated card you can find.

Galaxy isn't a bad brand and that card looks good because it is a full size rather than half height which means that it can have a larger fan than will spin slower making less noise, if that's important to you. Another option would be the Asus for $3 more which has a 3year vs 2 year warranty, but is half height so it's fan may be slightly noisier, but I only found 1 newegg review that mentioned it being noisy, and with cards this... um weak they don't really put of any heat so I can't imagine any of them you get actually being loud but just something to consider.

Noise doesn't bother me. The only thing that makes me lean towards the Galaxy are the 50 reviews, but I do see Asus as a better brand and might go with that one when it it's time to order. Thanks for all the help. Let me see if Tapatalk can Rep+.

That's strange dude. I have a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor on my laptop and it handles Bluray playback (came with a Bluray player when I bought it).

It depends on the software you're using. Also, the .mkv format is not exactly ressource friendly.

To answer the OP question pretty much any Nvidia card that has CUDA will be fine.
Wow, that is a bit overkill for an HTPC system. A Core i3 system would be sufficient. If you are going to go with 3D playback from BluRay, you would need a card that supports. I think there are some 240 cards that support... the list is available on the nVIDIA web site. You would also need a television that supports 3D. Most newer 120HZ televisions should support 3D, but not all.
