i7 975 Extreme...what am I doing wrong? - Page 2

Okay, I ran Real Temp 3.6 on my machine with STOCK 3.33ghz settings. Disappointing results to say the least...most cores were reaching 90 C under load from Prime95.

Looks like I'm off to get new cooling whether I want to OC or not.

Jesus. How long have you been using that thing? Even though i7s are built to tolerate fairly high temps, 90 C is just asking for trouble

That H70 will see you fine, and is quiet to top it off

Let's just say I'm really god damn glad I joined this forum and looked into OCing or I'd have never even realized this at all.

Been using this thing for a year now thinking the entire time "oh it's all stock parts running at stock settings, all is well". Feel like an idiot now, but better late than never I suppose.

I've rendered a LOT of stuff on this machine too which means 100% CPU load for hours on end.

It could be the rendering program your using is for graphics not CPU. AFTER you install your new cooler, run Prime95 for at least a hour to confirm your stable.

You'll be much better off with the Noctua NH d14 in my opinion than the corsair H70. The guides on overclock.net are there to help guys get started up, use them like all the other guys. You need to revert/cancel your OC as soon as possible, get an aftermarket cooler and methodically step up your overclock by tweaking various parameters in your BIOS ranging from Voltage to RAM divider, otherwise you'll start killing off your components anytime now.

I am pretty sure there is a 975 extreme 4GHz guide around here somewhere on OCN, follow it as closely as you can and you'll see great results. Good luck.

Did you really just overclock to 4ghz on the stock cooler and let it run at 90c?

Get that H70...and then overclock.
I would actually prefer a really good air cooler than the H70, but thats me. the Megahalems, venomous-x, noctua nh-d14, silver arrow, and the like ALL are in the H50 and H70 temperature range, sometimes better.

I think the 90°c was at stock clocks.

Some of these boards also have a "feature" that it drops clocks under high loads at high clocks. It basically dropped it down from 21x to 20x. I had to find a custom bios for my P6T7 that let it remain at high clocks. I had a P6T which also did the same thing, but since I never used it much, I never d/l the custom bios for it.

Nono, that was 90C at STOCK clocks if you can believe.

When I OC'd it to 4ghz I doubt it was hitting 90C, the multiplier was auto dropping down to 20x from 30x the second it started to do any real load.
