3 580's 3gb or 2 6990's - Page 7

post #61 of 135
i'd say the GTX 580 3GB 3 way SLI. we all know about nvidia's prowess in antialiasing and at that res op is using, more vram is always better.

and i heard quad crossfirex always has some kind of serious problems.

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=914056&mpage=1

those are some comparison of slightly overclocked versions of both setups at 1600p.

remember if u go 3 way SLI u'd need minimum 1000 watt psu. with quad fire u only need around minimum 800 watt i think.
since ur underwater and going to overclock high, i'd say 1200 watt and /or 1000 watt respectively.

Well I can say the same thing about nvidia

The 270.51, which is pretty much the best regarding performance wise in all the latest games, and they make games like DA2 much more playable.

BUT

I still get lots of flickering and errors on older games.
So its not all good and dandy with nvidia regarding this.
Not to forget the "drivers killed the card" issue with the 590 on early reviews.

Only difference is that the 6990 actually works regarding dual-gpu solutions at this moment, which also allows OCing and price wise, its better.

What Defoler said.

I'd take the 6990s over 590s if I were currently in the market for a high end gpu setup. Nvidia really dropped the ball on the 590.

i believe the op was trying to compare 6990s and 580s, not 590s. we all know 590s has horrible power delivery system unfit for watercooling

If you have the money to buy the superior product with more overall features and a vastly superior driver set, do it...get a pair of 3GB GTX 580's.

Radeons scale well but dip more under heavy tessellation/MSAA and have no onboard PhsyX with more driver hassles.

If your going nuts with this build the 3gb gtx 580s would be best to run anything without question.

I hadn't kept track of the 6990 developments, and I've never seen a waterblock for a dual gpu card before - and I knew the heat problem was inherent with the 6990. Glad it's working out for you then.

How about you stop saying things about cards which you aren't sure about or by "issues" no one had ever heard of, or assumptions which you clearly don't understand in?

You are digging a hole under yourself.

And Vega, is something special.
He is pushing huge resolutions which the OP won't use any time soon, and does that in a much more extreme way.
There is no actual "need" for 3GB. It just helps a huge lot if you want to get high AA.
Even 2x6990 can give you over the 60fps in almost every game with at least 2xAA and in eyefinity on 3x1080p or 1200p.
^^^ This guy: listen to him Viper

Why even post when you admit to not keeping up with the developments; yet you claim you're a graphics card aficionado under your name. The 6800 series Barts is based off the 5800 series Cypress manufacturing anandtech.

sorry but i am a nvidia user myself but i smell too much fanboynism
not insulting but you do know 1gb each cards vs 2gb each card?

3x1gb= 3gb for nvidia
2x2= 4 gb for ati?

so why are you guys saying that nvidia wins in VRAM?
it doesnt..

and dude trust me the 6990 are better.

but vram is the same anyway 1gb each gpu..
and thats the real vram your gonna get anyway..

I know this is OT, but I wanted to point out that getting a 2500K vs a 2600K will hurt your 3DMark scores. I know you said gaming is your priority, and the 2500K by far is the best value between the two, but you also said you wanted to bench. 3DMark just loves hyperthreading and what's another $100 considering the amount you will be spending?
