Old PS3 backwards compatibility w/ new firmware

Thread Starter
K, I bought my 20GB PS3 1 month to the day after PS3 was released. Ive since done nothing but upgrade the hdd to 160GB, and keep firmware up to date. My PS3 plays like new to this day, thanks to my minimal use, in all honesty, LOL.

I already know my PS3 has the actual PS2 hardware soldered onboard, IVe disassembled to see it myself, pretty neat. BUT, I hear the new firmwares come with updated PS1/2 software based emulation...

Is MY PS3 still using hardware based ps1 and 2 emulation, or being forced to use software emulation like all PS3 models that support backwards compatibility at all? Im not up to date on the models / versions, what is what, etc... I got mine, and thats about it. Every ps1 and 2 game I pop in, which is more often then ps3 or movies, plays perfect, no problem. Just wondering, thanks!

Ah, I thought some consoles that supported it used firmware, software based emulation instead of the actual soldered ps2 hardware emulation. My PS3 still plays all ps1 and 2 games I throw in it...

I have read that some newer games will require the new firmware. I am guessing that the newer upcoming blockbuster titles like BF3 is going to require the new 3.60 firmware. Valve's new game Portal for example will require firmware 3.60 to play announced on several web sites. Going forward this is really a good thing for developers and other ps3 users.

This is correct, the early models had the physical ps2 chip in it, so it was hardware emulated and all games could be played. But the later units had software emulation which had more problems and some games didnt work at all.

Correct, first gen 20gb/60gb consoles had the hardware fro ps2 emulation. The EARLY 80gb consoles had software emulation for ps2 games. After tat, non-existant.

The early 80gb PS3's software emulated the Emotion Engine but they still had some PS2 parts in them. It's a shame they stopped support because unscaled PS2 games really look good.

The best option is to get an upscaller that plugs in component to HDMI. Some sound system receivers have this capability.

Your other option is to use PCSX2 or another emulator that can render PS2 games in higher resolutions. You don't even need to rip your games, I got some PS2 games running right from my dvd drive.

Also all PS3's can play PS1 games.
