I'm still betting on that sony and microsoft would really like to have a APU of some sort in their next consoles. It depends how far into the future your looking. 4GB definitely reasonable now but maybe no so much in 2-5 years.

RAM is dirt cheap, and only to get faster when DDR4 comes out so I don't get what's with the complaining.

APU's could take off on consoles, but in the end their more geared to mobile electronics, and the not to mention the CPU and GPU counter parts will always be faster and cheaper to make. I doubt M$ and sony cares how much power their consoles consume or how long they can last on a battery pack.

well dedicated gaming machines aka consoles are a lot more user friendly and simple which is especially important when selling to kids, average joes etc. which probably explains why console games sell much more than pc games and this in the provide more incentive for people to make console games.

8GB is just silly. 4GB is what will probably happen.

Xbox = 64MB RAM, Xbox 360 = 512MB, nextbox = 4096MB?

My previous PC had 4GB RAM. While that is "feasible", but that's not enough. I frequently ran into situation that I needed more memory. Granted, not everyone edit large raw photos, or do data analysis. But if you use Chrome browser, go see how much memory it is using on your PC right now. You will be surprised. Chrome uses a lot of memory, especially when you have some extensions installed. But perhaps that's why Chrome is so fast, it is taking advantage of modern hardware. Honestly, RAM are really dirt cheap these days. I got 16GB DDR3 1600 for around $150 last month. On the one hand, you want developers to write efficient code to use less memory. On the other hand, you want to provide enough flexibility for them to take advantage of modern hardwares. Don't forget that the more threaded your hardwares/softwares are, the more memory they need.

Given that next gen consoles have yet been announced, by the time they launch it will be 1.5-2 years away. By that time, every PC, even entry level, will be shipping with at least 6-8GB memory (even a lot of cheap Dells are shipping with 4GB nowadays). The current gen consoles have a product life of 6+ years, and the next gen consoles are going to have an even longer product life. 8GB is really a minimum.

8gb is too much , no game needs 8gb . The more the better , but will they use 8gb of ram .. and imagine how expensive it would be .

Maybe sony should keep the cell processor and work on the gfx and ram for there next gen , if their cell is that good .

Why does no game need 8gb of RAM? It would be necessary if they started making very texture heavy games. Titles like Civ5, when running the largest maps, happily eat up nearly 5gb of RAM (combined with Windows services).

And more memory allows for larger map, and a lot more things going on at the same time. Imagine a 500-player Battlefield/CoD game!!! Er... I guess people's internet connection need to be a lot better before that's possible.

But remember today's games are built for hardwares today, they use what's available to implement what's possible. That's why no game today use that much memory. But when you open up these limits, developers have a lot more freedom to implement new ideas that were once thought crazy.

8 gigs is not ridiculous at all. It only cost me $100 bucks to get 8gigs of DDR3.

I always thought it was odd that the consoles had so little ram. Ram was not that expensive when they came out. These consoles would probably last a lot longer if they had 1 gig of ram.
