[GZ] Crytek want 8GB of RAM in next-gen consoles - Page 5

That seems so overestimated. The latest PC games never seem to use more than 2 gb memory.
Battlefield 2: Project Reality uses over 2GB of RAM alone! There are a few titles that use over 2GB of RAM, as I said earlier, Civ5 is a memory rapist.

Because vista uses more memory to run the os than xp does.

Decent amounts of RAM, all consoles need now is a decent Graphics chip

Don't forget that the latest PC games have been influenced by the shortcomings of consoles. If current consoles had a large amount of ram, the PC games of today would doubtless need a lot more ram.

Really, ram is so cheap in comparison to the rest of it, and is such a valuable resource that they may as well go hog wild with the ram in new consoles.

Battlefield 2 was a RAM whore overall, when it first came out.

I would imagine that 4GB would be enough, 8GB is a lot even for gaming PCs today. Also remember to take into account that all consoles (well, on each platform) have identical hardware, which makes for better optimization since there is only one set of hardware you have to code for (excluding making ports to other consoles, but that's different because they are essentially making a new version of the game for a different console and can optimize the game better for that console).

Plus, consoles can have more optimized and streamlined operating systems on them which reduces the amount of RAM taken up by the OS.

And remember, almost 6 years ago, the Xbox 360 came out. It only has 512mb of RAM. So those of you saying "what about 5 years from now?", I think having EIGHT times the amount of RAM as current consoles have will be enough for 5 or so years from now. Just imagine would they could do with double the RAM. But going to 4GB is EIGHT times the amount from the current gen's 512mb. Also, the PS3 only has 256mb of system RAM and 256mb of video RAM, and it's doing not too bad either.

Not that I wouldn't be excited to see 8GB and all sorts of other awesome hardware specs, but I think it's overkill and would just drive the price of consoles up.

Yes, the GPU uses DDR3, but the system uses XDR.

When the Xbox came out, which has 64MB RAM I think, wasn't ~256MB around a standard?

It seems to be ~half of what PCs typically have that the consoles get, and consoles have like quadrupled their amount each time they come out every five years or so. These are rough rules, but I'd wager ~2GB would be what the consoles would have if made today, actually maybe 4GB since they're going to come out after five years and if they're supposed to last longer.

Just random rough guesses.

Also, consoles don't need as much as PCs to pull off similarly good enough results, due to less overhead, different architecture, and since developers optimize better on the consoles. Could Crytek be complaining so they can be more lazy? That requirement format still refers to Windows XP as the base, so since Windows Vista (and later) use more memory than Windows XP, you'd need your PC to have more memory than if you had Windows XP to have enough.
I think Crytek just wants to use 100k poly models and 4k textures all around lol. 8 Gigs won't be a bad idea though... it would give a massive improvement in quality, and much much cooler effects. The games would border film quality.
