Battlefield 2 was a RAM whore overall, when it first came out.
I would imagine that 4GB would be enough, 8GB is a lot even for gaming PCs today. Also remember to take into account that all consoles (well, on each platform) have identical hardware, which makes for better optimization since there is only one set of hardware you have to code for (excluding making ports to other consoles, but that's different because they are essentially making a new version of the game for a different console and can optimize the game better for that console).
Plus, consoles can have more optimized and streamlined operating systems on them which reduces the amount of RAM taken up by the OS.
And remember, almost 6 years ago, the Xbox 360 came out. It only has 512mb of RAM. So those of you saying "what about 5 years from now?", I think having EIGHT times the amount of RAM as current consoles have will be enough for 5 or so years from now. Just imagine would they could do with double the RAM. But going to 4GB is EIGHT times the amount from the current gen's 512mb. Also, the PS3 only has 256mb of system RAM and 256mb of video RAM, and it's doing not too bad either.
Not that I wouldn't be excited to see 8GB and all sorts of other awesome hardware specs, but I think it's overkill and would just drive the price of consoles up.
