[Yahoo] Scientists make teleportation breakthrough - Page 15

If teleportation is just applying energy to transport matter, ie you step into machine that forms an quantum bubble that moves everything inside to another location, then it's just a more advanced car.

The question is basically whether the energy used is energy to transfer information + create matter equal to original mass or if it is just energy needed to transfer matter from one point to another. Obviously, moving matter would consume far less energy over at least short distances, whereas creating something of equal mass to the transported items would require a huge minimum energy cost over a distance of even one meter. You can also think of it as the energy to create the person from in the new location comes from the person in the old location and cannot be duplicated or saved and is as unique as a person can be. While in transit, you exist as a being of pure energy but as humans we don't have the faculties to perceive it or even the passage of time until we get turned back into matter.

I see quite lot people arguing over the soul being transferred or not.
An example is if you had identical twin, do you control both of them?

This must be the most uninformed comment I have ever seen.

The person that's being teleported will be you, but the one being recreated on the other end will not be you, It will be a clone, A carbon copy of yourself/conscious..

The real you gets destroyed in who knows how and what kind of pain.
I remember a movie on Sci-Fi YEARSSSSSSSSSSS back that was along this same line of thought. Maybe it was a newerish twilight zone Regardless, this is a scary thought.

When I read the first couple comments under OP I immediately thought of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: Wonka Vision! You could order a pizza over the TV and get it nearly instantly!

If I remember correctly, even star trek the new generation commented on the teleportation issue once or twice.

Haven't watched the original series, so I wouldn't know if the issue appeared there.

It was Realm of Fear Episode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realm_o...TNG_episode%29

But I distinctly remember a sci-fi short that used this same idea... or maybe it was so long ago that it actually was Star Trek.

Also, The Jaunt by Stephen King kinda follows along the same path with different consequences http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jaunt

This idea has been around for many years. Heck Eistein predicted this. This works through the idea of entanglement. Two particles are "entangled" with the same information. One is destroyed and the other maintains the same information. This can be measured from great distances. The problem I can't get over is that you have to move the other particle to this great distance, destroy the first and the information is maintained in the other. You still moved the particle to this other location. How did you get it there? OK you instantaneously moved information but you still had to transport the other particle by current means. Yeah you moved information instantaneously over light years of distance say but it took someone light years to get it there in the first place.

What I find interesting is that if you don't destroy this first particle and you change it, the other particle changes to the same state instantaneously "theoretically".

It's astounding how no one actually reads the article...

Unfortunately the breakthrough doesn't mean we'll ever be able to transport human beings, Star Trek style. At present even bacteria is far too complex to be transported.

Sure they are educated theories, but still
Go read up the definition of a "scientific theory".

They aren't just "educated" or "only" theories.

Einstein hated spooky action at a distance.

You are right in that the end result is the speed of light is still the limitation of the communication of information.
