You want a FAST scratch disk.. if you can afford it get one of those huge OCZ SSDs that sit in your PCI-E. If not a RAID-0 of cheap but fast drives (spinpoints for instance) is the way to go.

System disk should also be reasonably fast but I see no reason it need to be SSD fast.. a single spinpoint or caviar black would be fine for much cheaper and give you more room to grow.

Green drives are generally cheaper and because they turn themselves off, they tend to actually last longer. They are fairly slow however. They make good storage drives as long as you don't need to move huge chunks of data around frequently. If you can afford it, Id suggest you RAID-1 or 5 the storage disks (both will give you more protection for your precious work, 5 will also make it faster... if you DO for for raid-5 you will want to NOT get green drives as its kind of pointless to speed up slow drives)

Hope that helps.

can you link me to some shops you can buy from? I'm not familiar with UK pricing and availability which is why I've been waiting for someone else to respond, but I can do a quick lil search if theres any well organised sites you can link me.

HDD 300 or 600 mbps faster is ...?

Well I was think that I will get wd velociraptors or cheper caviar black

if Again Hdd will die I will loss whole data so RAID 5 fast and safe ?
2 x Velociraptors for system Raid 0 ?
300 or 600 mbps, faster is ...?
for scratch ?
for storage ?
Can you advice me what is best to buy to have job done ?
In next month I want buy Graphic, and now I confuse my self
Graphic card geforce 460 £100-£130 PNY palid zotac
vs
geforce 470 £170- £200 zotac palid PNY

Are there is big difference who clock them like, PNY palid or zotac ?

Buck up hdd, how you doing this ?

Velociraptors are expensive are they really worth money or just caviar black ?

thanks !

Ok first off, most on-board RAID controllers only support RAID 0, 1, and 5. You can do more complicated types of raid if you buy a dedicated controller.

RAID 0 is faster but LESS secure than a single drive. Minimum 2 identical drives, no capacity loss. if any disks die, you lose everything.

RAID 1 is more secure, has capacity of only ONE drive, and only one drive is needed to survive. minimum 2 disks.

RAID 5 is both faster and more secure than a single drive. Minimum of 3 identical drives and you lose the total capacity of one drive. one disk can die.

Which RAID you do is up to you, if any. In general it is a BAD idea to use "Green" or "Eco" drives in a RAID.

As for Velociraptors - they are FANTASTIC drives, but they are also pretty loud and are damn expensive for their capacity. I would NOT suggest using them in a RAID 0 situation simply because for the price of two velociraptors, you can get 3 or more WD Blacks, Samsung Spinpoint F3s, or similar drives, with far more capacity, and the 3 of them will beat 2 velociraptors in speed.

I would also not advise them for RAID-1 as RAID 1 has the primary function of storage, and a single velociraptor simply does not have enough capacity for most users.

In essence, if you use a velociraptor, use it alone and not in a raid. It could make a great scratch disk or system disk (perhaps one for each?)

For your storage drive I advise RAID 1 or 5 for the safety benefits. WD Caviar Black and Samsung Spinpoint F3 are very good choices in that they are relatively affordable, and very fast, while still having high capacity. If you can afford it, WD RE4 drives are even better (for reliability).

In terms of SATA2 vs SATA3 (300/600), it makes ABSOLUTELY no difference for mechanical drives. The fastest ones today cant even reach 200mbps. a few VERY expensive SSDs can just barely break 300mbps atm.

Anyway, what is your total budget? (for the drives)

Is hard to say budget I need something reliable!

not to expensive so SSD is not a option.
I need something quick for system so I will not wait to long for respond,
for a or scratch well I enough big and fast so I will not get kind of message that is no space on disc,
for storage well music and samples is 145Gb, folder with pictures One year non professional work is 200Gb, projects is folder with photoshop AF AI files so single one is around 40MB, next is folder that i keep some installers programs brushes and stock is 200Gb as well.
No professional work it tuck 1Tb by One year !

If I will spend so much money on HDD in this month I will struggle in next month to buy Graphic card I confuse my self with this so if you can explain what is best to get job done ...
geforce 460 £100-£130 PNY palid zotac

Okay I have something !

System : 2x WD VelociRaptor 150 GB Internal hard drive - 300 MBps - 10000 rpm
Serial ATA-300, 16 MB, 4.2 ms (average), 3.5" x 1/3H, 5 years warranty, 10.2 cm £75 x2= £150

or 32MB cache ? cache makes big difference ???

Scratch : WD VelociRaptor 300 GB Internal hard drive - 300 MBps - 10000 rpm is 16MB or RAID 0 ? than 2x Caviar Black ? WD VR £101

Storage : I'm going with 3 of the 1tb Black Caviars, or possibly 1tb Spinpoint F1's, in a raid 5 setup Question is do I need a RAID Controller like Adaptec ?
1TB F3 £40 x 3= £120 in RAID 5 speed secure and 2TB Right ????

With out controler is £371

This raid 0 is worth performance price ?

now I was thinking
VR 150GB system
VR 300GB scratch
3x 1TB storage this i need 2TB at least !

Please tell me if is something wrong

Data is safe on friend external HDD

Yes I forget My old system is on single WD Raptor 150Gb 10000 rpm so my be system 0+1 ?
