Push v's Pull

Thread Starter
OK, I decided I wanted better cooling on my GFX/MB in general by adding a window fan to my Antec 900.

I went out and bought a matching, clear TriCool fan, but low and behold, due to the height of my contac 29 in won't fit! I can't even fit a low profile 120mm fan in there with my CPU fan in it's push position.

My question is: Will I lose much in the way of cooling efficiency by changing my Contac 29 fan from a push to a pull configuration?
(from bottom to top, so I can fit the side fan in there)

Thanks.

Yes you may lose some performance in cooling.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought, but I should negate that somewhat by adding the side fan? (It's nowhere a wall or enclosed space)

depends on how much air the side fan can bring inside the case..also given that you have a good exhaust setup..you should also refine your exhaust as well to say its still performing the same way as it used to..

It will be and Antec TriCool on low setting.

But, the fact no-one said DON'T means I'm gonna go for it
Need to buy some TIM first, so I can reset the cooler (Contac 29 can be a ***** to set) and I'll post the differences, max atm is 46-52 depending on air temp.

that's why its still wholly dependent on how much cold air goes in..and by how much hot air goes out of the case..also the ambient case temp too..in my case the side fans just do around 60-80cfm and my exhaust is more than those..so i can keep a good pace on blowing out HOT air and keeping COLD air on the move inside..

When I had my cooler master hyper 212+ I ran into this problem when installing a fan on the side window of antec's 902. I used a hack saw to saw to cut of one of the mounting tabs on the Clear tricool fan, the northmost, inward pointing corner was enough to give me around 2-3mm. took about 2 min to do.

As for your coment about push to pull set ups. thats not here nor there. What your realy trying to do with a dual fan set up is increasse static pressre.
On that note, Test it for your self, you may notice with your fans, there is no diff between dual fans, push or pull. then agin. maby be worlds apart lol. kinda a rig to rig thing.

Ill bet cash money that there is not much diff if you put one fan on the cooler, in push or pull. But i'll bet 2 fans cool's by a few degree's

the pressure between the fans is IDEAL if the case is absorbing huge amounts of cold air..if the case is full of hot air then it will be useless as well..well if you make the exhaust fan ACT the same way the 2nd Fan used to be then by somehow you could achieve the same old results..

It depends on the type of fan. Some fan designs work better as pushers, other as pullers, and on top of that the amount of restriction adds another variable.
I believe that pulling is ultimately the best way to move air through a heat exchanger, given that the fan is optimized for it.

edit: nvm I thought this was a water cooling thread.

Im not sure what configuration moves more air when it comes to low restriction (no radiator)...
