They are referring to 700W power supplies with a peak rating of 700W. The HX650 has a much higher peak capacity than 700W. It's closer to 775W (the HX650 is a 650W continuous rated unit). The 750W Antec TruePower New is another continuous rated unit where the "peak" is over 850W.

A quality 650-750W is more than enough (that is, a quality unit that has a continuous rating of 650-750W, not a peak rating).

I like to have some overhead. If he can OC that card to 800, which a lot of 590 owners are doing with just 1.0 vcore, he will need an 850W. The 750W won't cut it. nVidia's recommendation is for the card clocked at 612 MHz. If he gets a GTX 580, the 750W is fine.

NVIDIA's recommendation is talking about 700W "peak" rated power supplies too. Most quality 650W power supplies would get a peak rating that exceeds 750W, and most quality 750W power supplies would get a peak rating that exceeds 850W.

2 days ago, revlimiter asked if his 650W TruePower New is enough to power his system with a single GTX 590 in it. Phaedrus2129 kept it simple and just said "Yes".

At 772 MHz, SLi 580's use 522 watts. The 590 at 800 will be about the same. An overclocked 2600K will pull about 150-175 watts. Add in mobo, drives, fans and you're approaching that 750W mark or possibly exceeding it. I don't like to be right on the edge of my power supply's rated nominal output. I don't know about you...

His processor isn't overclocked and maybe devdeep wants to overclock cpu&gpu. For a 4ghz and 900mhz 700watt isn't enough:thumb:

According to this image, the total power draw at the wall for their test system with the "GTX 590 OC" in it while running Furmark was 522W. If we assume 85% efficiency, then that would mean the system was pulling about 443W from the power supply.

So if we add about 175W, then we get about 618W of power drawn from the power supply if both the CPU and the GPU are under full load at the same time.

Therefore, I'm still absolutely confident that a quality 750W power supply is enough. A quality 750W is not going to have the "peak" rating that NVIDIA is referring to with their 700W power supply recommendation.

A gtx590 can't use that much watts by itself it would explode(or throttle to protect itself), if I remember correctly they are limited to ~375

I have new information: according to this image, they got their entire system to draw 616W from the wall while playing Crysis with a single GTX 590 installed.

So if I assume 85% efficiency during this power draw, then I get 523.6W. I'll call that 524W (that is, 524W of power being pulled from the PSU). If I add that 175W to this for the CPU, then I get 699W.

A quality power supply with a continuous rating of 750W still seems like the perfect choice to me.
