Budget Build

Thread Starter
Hey all, a friend wants me to do a budget build for them. I have a ceiling of $700 that is very firm so I am trying to get as much into the system as I can and keep it under that amount.

I have a PSU left over from another build that I am going to use. Its an 850W Raidmax. I know its overkill and probably not the best PSU, but it isn't costing me anything.

I am going with:

2500k cpu http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0354589

Microcenter SSD http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0351760

Coolermaster case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119203

Either an Elitegroup mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135279 or Gigabyte http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128487

5770 GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102873

G Skill ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231438

Hitachi HDD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145304

CM 212 cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103065

This system won't see any serious OCing. I would like to push it to 4.5 or so, but he would most likely be pretty happy with anything over 4. No SLI or CF will ever be used either.

Anyone have a better suggestion for anything I am using? How does this build look for the price?

I am currently at $683.72 for this build

Assuming it's for gaming there's no point getting a 2500k with that card because the card will be a bottleneck, especially if your not going to crossfire.

You'd see better performance in games by getting a cheaper CPU and better card.

For this kind of build i would probably go for a cheaper Phenom II X4 and a 6850. Use the savings to get a motherboard with 8+1 power phase and crossfire compatibility (and if possible Bulldozer compatability) that way in the future when he wants to upgrade again just throw in a second 6850 and possibly upgrade to BD.

A good motherboard for a PhII X4 would be an ASUS M4A87TD EVO. It has all this, and it's cheaper then that SB board you picked.

Instead of the Hitachi HDD get a Samsung F3.

Also i'd get a better case. The Coolermaster 430 is a lot better then the one you picked and only a small bit more.

And get the G.Skill Ripjaws that are 1600MHz

I would tell you to get a used GTX 460 at the for sale forum instead of that card. You can get one for $100 every once in a while. Since I know your in a tight budget I can help you with that. Of the 2 mobos you picked I would get the P67 D3.

Ok, should have mentioned that he is not a fan of AMD at all and wants an Intel CPU. He saw my rig and wants to get similar performance as mine, but budget is much more of a factor for him. Gaming is a big part of what the computer will be used for, but there will be lots of day to day tasks, like CAD, that he will be using it for as well.

Well then tell him if he wants similar performance in gaming with an SB chip that he has to fork out extra cash for a better GPU. Because if he's getting a 2500k with a 5770 then he's wasting money.

Better idea would be to get one of the last generation i5's if he wants Intel.

The 5770 is only going to cost $110, that's why we chose it. Are you telling me to get the used 460 for budget reasons, or because that card just makes a lot more sense with my build? The cheaper board that I listed has 2 PCIe slots so he could possibly add another 5770 to it later on and crossfire it if he isn't happy with it. I figure that 5770s are only going to go down in cost as time goes on and he should be able to easily pick another up if and when the time comes. I am a little concerned over that board as I never see any posts about it here and know nothing about it.

What about a second 5770 later on? Upping the budget right now is just not an option.

Don't up the budget then. Get a cheaper Intel chip and get a 6850.

2x 6850's later on and a cheaper i5 is still going to do better then 2x 5770's and a 2500k in most games.

The cheapest i5 I can find is a 650 for $140. The 2500K is only $180 and I'd rather give him the SB so he has more options with it if he choose to upgrade things at all in the future. There are a lot of people on here getting great results with 2500K's, so I can live with the $40 difference there.

Going with the i5 650 and a 6850 still puts me over budget. The 2500K and the 5770 bring me just in under $700. I appreciate your input though, rep added
