How bad are "Netbooks" (atom n550)

Thread Starter
I know someone that needs a netbook, prior to purchasing a laptop. After looking around, i see there is a dual core intel atom n550. How underpowered is this thing exactly? I mean, it has 1gb of ram (but i guess i can increase that) .

What's a decent netbook?

When theyre on linux theyre not that bad. With 7 and they seem a little slower.
Personally I find doing normal everyday stuff to be annoying on a netbook, especially as soon as you get a couple processes going. Its like you have to do things one at a time, so you might as well get a tablet or something.
Not to mention its just too small... but I feel the same way about 15" laptops too

Just my 2 cents

I owned a Toshiba NB305 (Atom 260) for two years, and after tossing in a SSD a second gig of RAM, and Windows 7, the thing was speedy. It performed well doing pretty much anything. Word processing, Internet surfing, light gaming, Movie watching, you name it. It became my primary system at college, and was really handy on the go, when combined with a wifi hotspot.

Bottom Line: They aren't as pointless and underrated as you'd think, especially if you are reasonable and aren't going to attempt to run excessively taxing programs on them. But they hold their own, IMHO, of course!

Hope it helps,

Wesker

The issue is the GPU... it is too weak. Netbooks have issues with 1080p playback.

Look for an AMD Brazos netbook instead... it's a bit more but user experience is better.
Once again...

I have a Mini 311 and it does 1080p playback of Youtube or off my home network flawlessly with the ION. I can even push it to my tv with HDMI and it is ultra smooth.
