Problem with new computer - found powered off

Hi Guys,

Just built a new rig (specs below), and it's been giving me some problems.

First I went in the bios and found that the ram was running at 1066mhz(I believe), changed that to 1333mhz as it should be), and started installing windows, when I went to install updates they started to fail and it was pretty unstable (random BSODs etc..). I noticed that voltage was less than rated by the memory so I increased it from 1.5v to 1.6v, and installed windows. All was fine until I was installing an application and the applications started becoming unresponsive, so I decided to restart. When I hit start, restart, the computer gave me another BSOD (same as others IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). I ran Prime95 for 12hours and it passed all tests.

But then I ran some memory tests (memscope) and it gave me a lot of errors (900+) but when I tried isolating which slot/stick was faulty I couldn't figure it out, so I went back in the BIOS and found out that the memory was running at cas 7-7-7-20 instead of 9-9-9-24 (they were set to auto of course). I was like how did that happen??? So i changed it to 9-9-9-24 and ran the memory test again. All good!

Until a few hours later(6 or so) I went away from PC for a while, came back to use it and found it switched off. No BSOD, not even in minidump.

Any ideas?

Take out all your ram, Test each Dimm in different slots while Running Memtest86+, One at a time
post #3 of 8
Also, there might be a chance your windows install got corrupted. Try using memtest86+ to test the sticks without windows getting in there.

I'll try it out and let you know. Is Memtest86+ better than memscope?

I suspected a corrupt installation could be causing this, it just isn't happening frequently enough to pinpoint.

Mind you I did try stick stick (one at a time) with memscope, so it could be all in vain, but worth trying...

thanks!

Memtest86+ is mostly useful for verifying that your memory does, indeed, work, since it simply writes various combinations of numbers to memory and reads them back. However testing your memory under windows stresses the memory controller more and can expose an unstable overclock.

This all assumes your windows install hasn't been broken tho.

It sounds like you got the memory issue squared away and have something new.I would wait and see how it behaves now and see if it shuts down again.

Ok so I *think* I figured out why I found the PC turned off, second time I left it idle I got a BSOD saying INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR, googled a bit and found (http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=955885&mpage=1). Basically when the PC was trying to go to sleep it was triggering a BSOD that doesn't leave a dump. Installed hotfix and it's all good .

Thank you all for your help.
