What am I doing wrong?

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
A few nights ago my 950 was loading in P95 at around 75c at stock 1.26v. Then I wanted to get back my 4 Ghz OC, so eventually I got up to that, still being at 1.26v. Got a few BSOD's, blahblah, then got a "worker stopped" error in P95. So I rebooted, changed "CPU Differential Amplitude" to 800mv, then started P95 small FFT. Now I'm loading at 92-95c and eventually a CPU overtemp shut down, what happened? Did I just break my Noctua C12? Everything else in my case stayed at basically the same temperatures. Yes, i cranked up the fan speed to 100%, did nothing. Yes, I reapplied TIM (small blob on the center). Cleared CMOS and started again. Still the problem occurs. Ambient is around 20c according to the thermostat.

Have you tried taking off the "800mv" that you applied? Its not really possible to "break" your cooler, unless a. your fan isn't working in which it would still keep it cooler than that, or b. if you physically broke it in half. Most likely it is by putting the voltage too high - check the load voltage in CPUZ and let us know what it is, i'm sure its going to be pretty significantly high

I told you I cleared CMOS lol load voltage according to cpu-z is 1.272, not too bad right?
And yes, the fan is working, its the loudest one in my case.

1.26v =/= 92C ~ something is definitely amiss.

Are you sure it's not coretemp/hdmonitor that is reporting incorrectly?

Well even when in the bios it says I'm just sitting there at 55c, bios counts as idle right?

Hmm, yes. It should.

Guys, back me up here: could he have bumped his sensor and uncalibrated the thermistor?

Anyone? I cannot for the life of me figure this out.
Or did I post in the wrong section?
Everything else in my case is still running nice and cool, except for my i7 being unusually hot.
