Also, the above calculator is WAY off.

Most 6950's don't have problems running at 6970 clocks..
The calculator is of course not hyper accurate, but it assumes 100% load during stability testing. Real world occurrences where you'll see constant 100% load are very rare (unless you do a lot of video editing), but would you risk it? I sure as heck wouldn't... you're 200W below the recommended level.

Also, the memory timings will be tighter on the 6970.

I think investing in a good, reliable PSU is ALWAYS a good thing, so I'd say yes for sure.

The 6950 is definitely a good card. It will not outperform a 6970, but it might not matter for you. What resolution will you game at?

ugh, no

I would feel fine running a 6970 on a quality 500w PSU

While I do agree on the replacing psu suggestion, it is not because he needs 750w, it is because that is not a good unit and I wouldnt risk such expensive components with it

The 6950 is the same card as the 6970, just a different bios.

I've owned both. It's true the dye is identical, but the VRAM chips aren't. Why would the 6970 require an 8+6 pin and the 6950 6+6 if they were identical cards?

Yes. You only need about 450 watts. Your running a 850watt power supply on a 200 watt GPU and 200 watt CPU.. Overkill.
