Need help ASAP 6950/6970

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Just came into some cash and decided to pick up a new graphics card. Ill be upgrading from an XFX 5870 1GB

What i need some help deciding is whether or not i should shoot for the 6970 and fork out the extra hundred bux, or go for the reference 6950 and unlock it to 6970 spec. A 6950 will save me the cash, but i dont know if it will preform well in my system unlocked. Im tunning 3x20inch lg monitors in eyefinity. The res is only 5104x900, so its not that extreme. If i DO go with the 6950, i can buy another one soon and unlock them both for x fire 6970's, in theory. If i go with a 6970, however, it may take me quite a while to save up for a second one AND it will cost me an extra $100 dollars up front.

Any and ALL help is much appreciated.

From what i've read, there's a lot of problems you will encounter by unlocking a 6950 to 6970.

So in my opinion, well, still get CF 6950 but just do shader unlocks or whatever its called *somebody correct if im wrong* dont unlock it to 6970, then CF it when you get the money ^_^

The unlocked 6950 will perform on par with a stock 6970 ~

Second 5870 now will be the most performance now. They are the cheapest of the 3 now too.

If you can find another 5870 grab it and crossfire seeing as you have one already and it runs dX11, so no real need to go to 6 series.

5870's CF would run everything maxed I would assume, not sure though I run one monitor.

My stock 6950 benched about on par with my mates stock 5870.

Well...
I bit the bullet and ordered them. The store i go to didn't have what i wanted in stock unfortunately (was originally going to get 2 reference Sapphire 6950's, but they only had non reference Sapphires.) so i ended up going with the last two Diamond 6950's that apparently are in circulation here on the west coast. Lucky me!
Wanted reference for the full back plate and the possibility of unlocking them to 6970 spec.
Diamond was an iffy brand for me because ive never bought anything from them and apparently they are bare bones when it comes to packaging. But the only other reference ones they had were Visiontek and the guy recommended Diamond over them. i suppose that as long as they come in one piece and work, thats what counts.
Also, im really banking on my Strider Plus 750w handling these cards.
