Need Help $500 budget HTPC

Thread Starter
I want to build a HTPC but I need some help. My budget is around $500. It will be used for mostly netflix/hulu and needs to hold all my movies and music. I would also like it to be m-ATX so its small and out of the way.
oh I might use it for folding too.

I assume you want it energy efficient and won't be overclocking it?
Well I'd go with a 2500k personally just because x6's are monster energy hogs even at stock speed. Though you can't go wrong with . Not so sure about AM2+/AM3 M-ATX boards though.
If you do go M-ATX with the 2500k it'll limit your overclocking hear horribly so on the ASUS boards.

2500K should also allow you to skip on a external graphics card if you wanna go that route (H67).

Do you need a new case? PSU? Cooler? HDD/SSD? Monitor? Or RAM?

If you didn't need any of the above I'd try to get a 450 or 460 GFX card a P67 M-ATX board and the 2500k. But thats just me and idk if it'd go over any.

2500k seems a little extreme for netflix/hulu. You'd probably be okay with an older dual core celeron/athlon. It would save you money, you could probably build an htpc around one for 300-400$.

Oh well they said they may want to fold and I wasn't sure if they wanted to OC or not so.

Something like this would be enough for an HTPC, or so I've been told.

If you go the video card route for the folding, the mother board listed above would be fine. But if not, and you skip the video card, and need a HDMI, a mobo like this would be good:

That's an open box version, to save a few bucks, but the retail version is like $75 I think.

i currently use a 2500k for my htpc and it works very well (underclocked to 1.6ghz uses about 50~60watts streaming) , but if energy effiency is importaint look into a 2100t, in some cases from some reviews ive seen its very power efferent around that of an atom, when paired with a h67 board. For a video card (if you dont want to use an integrated graphics) maybe look into a gtx 430, 520 from nvidia or a ati 5670, 5750 or 5550 are all pretty good (3d, blu-ray, streaming etc).
