A great idea is if you mainly run linux like me, then just use /etc/cron.tab.weekly.

I do this for my workstation I setup for my project at the Lab at my Uni. I have a RAID 1 2TB Caviar Greens SATA2 running backups off of a OCZ revoX2 SSD and one 500GB HDD caviar black data drive. The backups happen on Sunday at midnight and have timestamp formated labels to keep track. Will then keep all backups for the simulation data that run 24/7.

filename formated like this: backup_ssd_20110424.tar.gz, backup_hdd_20110424.tar.gz.

The one thing is just google search the correct commands to run the backup through crontab/vixiecron, or can just make bash script. If mostly run Win7 then just go into Control Panel and schedule backups to the Raid 1 at XX:XX time on X day a week. I think it might even be able to save to a specific filename. Also, might be able to compress and then save it for less time on backup.

If your worried about security of data just get a third drive for RAID 1 if it is really really important stuff. The one point that is key is are you running anything from the Raid 1, like OSs or applications??? If not don't bother with anything but Raid 1 because you don't care about performance you care about security of data, if so a RAID 1+0 would be best with dual parity like a Raid 1 backup but with better bandwidth.

Code:
Raid 1+0 Cons:
Array capacity is at only 50% of total disks space

Raid 5 Cons:
RAID 5 costs more for write-intensive applications than RAID 1.
RAID 5 is less outage resilient than RAID 1.
RAID 5 suffers massive performance degradation during partial outage.
RAID 5 is less architecturally flexible than RAID 1.
Correcting RAID 5 performance problems can be very expensive.

Raid 1 Cons:
Mirroring so no extra performance gain.
Mirroring so wasting drives but redundancy of data.
