http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_display

basically its what 99% of the worlds monitors are made of. add in some marketing mumbo jumbo (LED, 1000000000 contrast) and you have a perfect way to trick consumers. TN panels are cheap to manufactuer and easy to dupe customers.
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/

they produce horrible color reproduction and are basically awful. Other fancy stuff like LED is used. no your monitor is not made of LEDs, closest thing to that is OLED at this point in time. LED means backlighting and is used for energy effenciency. Well CCFL backlighting is standard backlighting and it uses no more energy than LED backlighting. Led backlit displays also lose performance in terms of brightness (lumens) in screens, so to add insult to injury, they cost alot and suck hard.

What you need is In-Plane-Switching panels, or IPS panels. Once only used by the photography industry, IPS panels are now used by the consumer market. I own an eIPS panel (there are many types, E being economical while S is super/standard IPS panels). Ips panels produce superior colors in the color spectrum.

I recommend the Dell u22/2311h or the HP zr22w for your budget (which seems like less than $300). its like using an SSD, you can never go back to a TN panel.

yup, those are the ones. See they don't really cost that much. The TRUE IPS panels are these:

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/prod...4&sku=224-9949
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...1-4194577.html

but those are only for the ultra rich. For you an I there are Dell u2311hs, Asus and HP zr22ws

They're whats called eIPS panels. THey are hands down any day better than any TN panel in existance. IPS panels are amazing, simply amazing. I own a u2311h and it is boss. Good luck on your next monitor build mang.

He can get 2 of the HP TN panels for that price though. Considering the two monitors are a very similar price, I think he's got a pretty specific budget.

IMO, colour reproduction isn't that big a deal if the main usage is gaming. Games use such a large and exaggerated colour spectrum that neither an IPS or TN gives you realistic colours, and it's personal choice as to which looks better in a given scene, depending on which screen's version of reality suits you better.

I suppose you are right. Till I compared a personally calibrated ViewSonic LED LCD TN panel with two u2311h. I thougth there was something extremely wrong with the TN panel with the two u2311hs. No, I for one cannot agree with your statement. Logically yes, you are correct it shouldn't matter, you never pay attention to notice the wide gamut as you're always on the move, but for me, I do notice. I noticed a change in gameplay since day one. It was even bigger an upgrade for me than getting a second 460 for gaming.
