As I said in my previous post, there is more to crunching on a daily basis than just points, yes. But to use your analogy, if you're invited to a car race are you going to purposely show up in a civic hybrid because it fits your philosophical ideals? Again, if that's how strongly you feel, then why compete? Why not just drive your hybrid daily and be happy with that? For me, the fun of competing is having a chance to win.

And to your point that we won't be a global powerhouse, you should look around. OCN is 3rd in the WORLD at folding and we are currently 37th in the WORLD in BOINC; and OCN as a team hasn't even been BOINCing that long. You better believe we'll be a world power as we get more people on board here.

I'm not trying to be exclusionary. I think it's awesome if someone even contributes a few hundred points so the team as a whole has that many more points. But in the end, if it's a competition where highest points wins, than why not try to get the highest points?

That is the last thing you want to be spending your money on is points that give you nothing in return.

I don't want to hate but I feel bad for you spend your money getting satisfaction from receiving points....

I got an idea... I'll get the skeletons from Berzerkly Dev. and build an APP... call it Points@Home and give everyone 1,000,000 per GPU cycle and write it in such a way that it hogs the whole computer and brings screen updates and other things to a halt (like PrimeGrid GPU tasks). Then, I will hold contests and see how many folks want to play.

Of course, I need to actually be computing something...
how about Pi Squared X .12345678 to the 1,000,000 power? Something useless, but I will give Billions and Billions of points every hour to happy point whores!!!!

That should do it... then all the point whores can flock to my app and let others run usefull tasks while they drag race for nothing (like primegrid).

LOL!

Oh, so because I drive a VW Bug or old Camry I can't have fun... typical attitude that destroys the fun for everyone else. If I was invited to a "bring what you got" race and it turned out to be headsup, no brackets... I would probably eat some food and leave because it would be useless.

However, I must point out, we are sort of off topic here... Seems to me some of the contests are in fact run well with clear goals. Participating in those kinds of things are fun! We run certain tasks that "BOSS" assigns per contest rules and goals and go for it!

But, to have a contest for pure points only means ONLY primegrid tasks and that sucks horsey hind end bigtime.

It's a hard one, the points thing. i found my self in the past competing in certain tasks that would give off more points just to brake even
don't get me wrong, it wasn't PG tasks but i found it hard to keep up on WCG and there seems to be no GPU tasks available so i turned to AQUA,SETI and others to keep the cards hot

now there is a person in my country who was flying up the ranks on a 1.6Ghz machine now boinc doesn't show overclocks but it was about 100,000 a day hmmmm

with the points thing like it is its easy to see why frown.gif

i end up spending in the err of $50-$75 a month on power and hammer the hell out of my CPU/GPU and hard drive only to see some one idle past on what i can only describe as a 90w scooter? thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

thinking.gif . . . . . . i have had a think about it and yep bad taste badge to that person

Exactly my point. I will participate in any/all contests so long as PrimeGrid isn't involved. I put 4 computers on BGB6 and for some reason rosetta screwed me up on a linux laptop with their calc errors... sigh.. not biggy. But, like you, my system runs 100% loaded most of the time except when I play games which ain't often lately and I want that "COST" to mean something, to benefit others...

Anyway, bottom line, anything having to do with GLOBAL SUM TOTAL points was trashed by primegrid so it's something to ignore now.

i want to build 2 more computers an HTPC lga1155 and a server lga2011 because the server is on all the time at the moment anyways and no GPUs in it
the server that i am using now is an old amd from before 2000 so the board is got the old caps in it and its off the net and no redundancy but the drives are on a card but still. . .

Do you even read? Your little cut comes before the part where I wrote

I'm trying to be civil and point out my personal feelings on a contest. You, on the other hand are picking and choosing what you'd like to read and addressing that.
And on my machines I did the math and I get far more points from MilkyWay than I do on PrimeGrid so that's what I would run for a contest. So it wouldn't ONLY be primegrid.

A.) Don't ever presume to tell me what I want to be spending my money on. People get so holier than thou with these projects they forget that maybe what they find "worthy" someone else doesn't and vice versa.
B.) Don't feel bad for me. You have no idea what I'm getting my satisfaction from.

I have been making a point about contests specifically, and yet I'm getting flack about my philosophies on crunching? I feel bad for people who can't read and don't understand what I'm saying. Instead I get propaganda like "points whore" thrown around instead of addressing what I write.

Oh, and one more thing that goes out to the community as a whole: There are posts all over this forum by the mods and "people in charge" that point out how we are quickly moving up the ranks and tons of overtake projects and contests where we're trying to get ahead of other teams. Then everyone comes in and says "yay we're awesome look at us go!" You know how we're moving up the ranks? Points. Not once in those threads have I seen anyone come in and be like "yeah, we're moving up but it's only on DNETC so who cares, it shouldn't count."

There's already an atmosphere created of "points for the team = what's good for the team" and its created by the powers that be.
