all though the points system was meant to be a reflection of the effort put in by the individual
computer time X power or something like that, it was meant to give you something to show for the sometimes many years of effort because people don't or won't do something for nothing
the irony is that, that's the whole point of this?

B.) Don't feel bad for me. You have no idea what I'm getting my satisfaction from.

I have been making a point about contests specifically, and yet I'm getting flack about my philosophies on crunching? I feel bad for people who can't read and don't understand what I'm saying. Instead I get propaganda like "points whore" thrown around instead of addressing what I write.

Oh, and one more thing that goes out to the community as a whole: There are posts all over this forum by the mods and "people in charge" that point out how we are quickly moving up the ranks and tons of overtake projects and contests where we're trying to get ahead of other teams. Then everyone comes in and says "yay we're awesome look at us go!" You know how we're moving up the ranks? Points. Not once in those threads have I seen anyone come in and be like "yeah, we're moving up but it's only on DNETC so who cares, it shouldn't count."

There's already an atmosphere created of "points for the team = what's good for the team" and its created by the powers that be.
You post your opinions, people will reply to your opinion. You cannot expect to post something to the extent where everyone will just agree or not reply to what you say. What is the point of a forum.

Your post was directed in a way for this to be a numbers game/contest to "win". That, throws dirt on the whole point of donating CPU time. We have a contest guys! Who will have the most points to win, and oh, as a bonus you will help return results to the distributed computing projects!

The point system, like deegon stated, was a beautiful creation to

1. show explicit recognition to that persons donation and
2. a way to gauge how much someone is donating.

This in itself creates contests, etc, which in the end pushes for higher returned results/CPU time to the projects.

I'm trying to be civil and point out my personal feelings on a contest. You, on the other hand are picking and choosing what you'd like to read and addressing that.
Didn't you JUST do that with me? LMAO!!!

Fact is, yes, we MOVE UP the ladder in various SINGULAR tasks by points. That is so obvious it's blinding and THAT has been what we have been working towards mostly so far as I can tell.

HOWEVER, if you bothered to UNDERSTAND the WHOLE POINT, you would see there is no conflict in anything I said!!!

THE WHOLE STINKING POINT is relative to GLOBAL TOTAL POINTS, not individual task points/rankings.

Get it now? THE SUM OF ALL THE TASKS is irrelevant now largly because of PrimeGrid. PERIOD!

Is that clear enough? I'll say it again, GLOBAL SUM ALL TASKS ADDED TOGETHER is MEANINGLESS now. PERIOD!

That was my whole point all along...

So let's run VW's with other VW's and run dragsters against other dragsters and keep them separated for greater participation. PERIOD! That is another point you didn't get.

Sheesh, some folks...

^^agree with that statement.

Can you guys start a new thread to bash each other?? This thread is about the Pentathlon, not about "point whores" and bashing. Thats the thing about BOINC, you can choose what you want to work on. High points or not. If your only aim is high points, then so be it. I run the tasks that I want to run at that moment.

Milkyway FTW. If not that, I hope Einstein gets it. As those two are my preferred GPU projects.
