Thermal compound question

Just wondering if gpu uses different kind of thermal pastes?? if not, then is artic silver 5 good for gpus?? thx in advance...

Arctic Silver will work on GPUs, but I avoid it for a few reasons:

1. GPUs (or their IHS and heatsinks) tend to have a large area and/or uneven surfaces requiring more paste than CPUs. AS5 is very expensive per unit of volume.

2. AS5 is capacitive and can cause issues with GPUs that have bare dies unless you are careful not to avoid near by components, especially the resistors around the die.

3. I do not remount GPU heatsinks/waterblocks freequently, and AS5 does not last as long as many other TIMs.

4. There are other TIMs that perform just as well or better for lesser cost, that have more favorable longevity and no conductivity/capacitance.

That said, if AS5 is all you've got, go ahead and use it. It won't hurt anything unless you are a complete slob with it.

I see... I thought AS5 is made to last for a long time... If not then what TIM do you recommend??

ATI gpus are perfectly flat, small and there are probably just as many compounds cheaper than AS5 as there are ones that are more expensive.

3. I do not remount GPU heatsinks/waterblocks freequently, and AS5 does not last as long as many other TIMs.

Actually, AS5 is one of the few thermal compounds that needs to cure, so it actually gets better with time.

I was gonna say the same as joemaniaci. AS5 has a cure time and does get better with age. I have had AS5 last for years on components with no issues or reapply that was non voluntary through regular cleaning/dusting or servicing of my components.
