Molex to 3-pin adapter, and other questions

Ok so in a mere 8 hours (waiting for a check to clear the bank monday morning) I will finally be placing my newegg order for my FIRST FULL BUILD EVER

Here are some quick facts about my build:

I will have a Cooler Master HAF 912 with a Hyper 212+ CPU cooler

I will be removing the included 120mm fan on the front of the case to accommodate a 200mm front fan. I will use the extra 120mm to Push/Pull a Hyper 212+

That gives me a total of four fans: One rear 120mm included with the case, one on the Hyper 212+, the extra 120mm also on the Hyper 212+, and one 200mm in the front

My questions are related to the fan setup. I have throughly read the P8P67's manual on ASUS' website. According to the motherboard's layout, there are four fan header plugs named as follows: CPU_FAN (4-pin), CHA_FAN1 (4-pin), CHA_FAN2 (3-pin), PWR_FAN1 (3-pin).

CPU_FAN is where my Hyper 212+'s connection will go
CHA_FAN1 for the second fan on the Hyper 212+
CHA_FAN2 for the rear exhaust 120mm
PWR_FAN: I've read that this is for special circumstances for when your PSU (normally Antec) has a cable so that the mobo can monitor it's fan... vast majority of people said NOT to use this header

That leaves me with the last fan: The 200mm front intake fan. I only have 3 (usable) Fan headers on my motherboard. There is a molex cable included. Is using the molex generally acceptable for a front intake fan? Will it be running at full speed (obviously I will not be able to control the fan attached to a molex) or at another speed?

Also, if you see anything wrong with where I'm going to plug those fans in, let me know!

I would use a splitter for the two fans on your cooler.

So splitting that CPU_FAN header is ok? I'm not sure how reputable the articles I've read are, but I have generally read that splitting fan headers is not recommended as to safeguard the mobo.

Get a splitter
Put both fans onto it and plug into CPU_FAN header
Plug other fan in free fan header

???

Profit.

EDIT: I doubt your fans are going to pull that much through the header. I ran my Ultra Kaze 3000 RPM fine off of a header. Hell I actually ran 2 off it for about 3 months. Still works fine.

I've heard that too, but I doubt it's an issue. Wouldn't the VRM make sure nothing drew too much power?

Also, if you feel uncomfortable connecting both to your mobo, you could always get a fan controller

Thanks for the replies, Rokabud and Lord Xeb! Just for reference, this is what the ASUS P8P67 Manual says: "The CPU_FAN connector supports the CPU fan of a maximum 1A (12W) fan power."

It looks like most Cooler Master fans are around 0.35A, 4.2W

So (if simple math works for these sort of things) the load on that header will be .8A and 8.4W... I should be good then right?

(BTW Lord Xeb, your overclock guide is great even for 2011!)

EDIT: I think this will work and eliminate any concerns about stressing the motherboard. It splits the the fan header into two, but the power is actually supplied by a molex connection. The PWM is connected to the motherboard. Kinda nice setup, looks like a cable management disaster tho...

Sounds right. Where did you find the power draw of the fans? I'd like to know that for some of mine too =)

Also that is a very clever fan splitter. I've never seen one before

I actually just typed in "Cooler Master 120mm amps" into google. There were 4 CM models that had the same power specifications, so I'm going to conclude that they are all around the same spec. And yes that fan splitter is pretty nice and has rave reviews. While I think the CPU_FAN header could handle the load, better safe than sorry, plus this little guy lets me run 3 fans all on the PWM header without worry of header overload.
