Just got the MSI 6970 installed, Need adivce

I had a 6950 before and my Heaven benchmark seemed low at a score of 979. Min FPS was 22 max was 82. This was on 1920x1080. I made no adjustments to anything in the GPU or CPU.

Now with the 6970 my score only got a little better at 1067. Min FPS 25 max was 91 all setting the same. With my setup in my sig is this sounding about right? Also if I OC the card in Afterburner or Asus Catalyst it will only let you go so high which is fine. My issue is what is a good safe setting for this card that will give me noticeable change? Also I cna only seem to adjust Core clock(mhz) and memory clock(mhz). Core voltage and shaders are locked. Is there a way to unlock these?

I am also trying to find out how to get it so the GPU fan will crank up during hard gaming to keep the temps down. I can do it manually in Afterburner but I dont see a way to make a profile for the fans so the fan will increase speed at certain temps on its own. I have teh Asus suite II software as well and that is not letting me do this either.

I am trying to learn this stuff but I have little time to sit down and absorb it all.

IF any of you have some simple directions for me that would be great. Feel free to treat me like a 6 year old and use small words and pictures

Did you have the 6950 unlocked to the 6970?

As for after burner, in the settings you can setup fan profiles.

no no I have an MSI 6970 now. I had a 6950. Ya I looked in the settings and all it says is enable user controls for fans then I can adjust the fan speed but it will just stay there at that speed no matter what until I then go and adjust it again. It wont ramp up or down on its own based on temps.

Ok I think I figured out the fans. I cna add nodes and it will then adjust accordingly. now I just need to understand the overclocking feature better and do it without messing ti up. It will let me go up to 950/1450 max. Can I just set it at that and forget it? Is that the built in safety measure they have?

If you don't change the voltage than you probably won't damage the card. You might get some artifacts, then you just turn it back down.

There are no safety features in there. You overclock at your own risk.

Ya I figured. I played with the fan curve but I cant get the card to go below 38 even cranking it up to 80%. THe GPU usage is 0 as well. If I leave it at default setting which is 24% and auto adjust I guess it just goes up to 44-45 degrees and the fans do nothing to prevent the heat up.

In the settings general tab it does say I can unlock the voltage control. My card has the bios switch so I was told that could save me if I corrupt it somehow by just going back to the other bios setting. I wouldnt think they would let you adjust these setting if they thought it was that easy to mess the card up, right?

I know voltage can kill it fast if you are not carefull though. I am sure theer is a better way to OC the card then this software like acutally going into the bios itself and doing it there, but that is a little beyond me at the moment.

I think I am going ot have to go water cooled sooner than I thought.lol

I have to set the fans at 50% in order to keep teh temps at 40 when idling or at very low usage like 0-5%

What are your ambient temperatures? What is your stock vcore (VID)? I'd just do some searching around this forum. You might find some posts from others that have a 6970 as well.
