Without the ARG shenanigans, I don't think anyone would have minded. But when you start teasing people with not one, but TWO different countdown clocks, you're going to ruffle some feathers.

As of right now the requirements on 7/13 games have been completed and the unlock time is still on the same day it would normally unlock. Time to face the fact that this was a total scam.
The "scam" is that the game will most likely be unlocked around midnight now, instead of 9AM PST.

It's currently at ~1:30AM PST, and Audiosurf and The Ball are very close to completion, which will most likely drag that number down to ~11:00PM PST tonight.

If that's not early enough for you, that's your problem, but that doesn't make it a scam. The official Steam release date has always been 9AM PST tomorrow morning. On Friday, they released this new countdown timer to shave time off of the initial release, and everyone gave themselves false hope (not counting the first timer that counted down to Friday morning) that they could easily make the game come out some point over the weekend, and then, when it didn't happen, you get posts like yours, claiming Valve lied to us and it's a scam and anything in between.

meh, people arent forced to buy the games, and if they did it just to get portal early. That is their fault, not valves.

I dont care about portal, but if it was battlefield 3, i still would not have purchased the games just to get it released early.

The deal is a good deal for people that wanted those games, and it helped to get those games noticed, so i think it was a good deal for the indie developers, not so much for valve really(except for the money they got from selling all the games).

I love hearing about all the people boo-hoo'ing over the whole release shenanigans. Personally, I like hearing/experiencing a developer having fun with releasing a game (specifically a game with such critical acclaim as Portal) rather than hyping it with doctored footage, absurd claims as to projected popularity, projected sales records, and all of that nonsense. A team that has a good time making and releasing a game will usually imply that the consumer will have an equally (or greater) good time playing it. If only there were many others out there that had this philosophy I imagine I'd buy more than one game every couple years (the last set of games I bought was the Orange Box, and that was back in the fall of 2008--playing the demos of recent games has not inspired me to buy any since then, and Portal 2 will be the first game I've purchased since I got the Orange Box). Go Valve, and I can't wait to start playing Portal 2!

I believe that alot of us, myself included, allowed ourselves to read way too much into the ARG hidden messages and determined that they meant what we wanted them to mean as oppossed to what they were actually saying. the message that included "4/15/11=4/19/11" or whatever never said specifically, PORTAL 2 is releasing before the release date at any specific time. They simply HINTED at something and said we could help release it early. Never said how early. Really we are running with it to make into what we wanted, and then being mad that it didn't mean what we all wanted it to mean.

Aside from that, I love valve games and own all of them. But they're a game company, live your life. Valve doesn't have the power to make you angry or upset, they simply triggered something in you that already existed. Maybe you should consider how and why the actions of a game company can get you so upset and if it really matters at all what Valve does or doesn't do.

I saw that link already, and decided to scroll through it to get an idea of how far the rabbit hole went. I decided against reading it after my scroll finger got tired.

As for my thoughts on their promotion, Valve needs to be more transparent on what actually will come of players actions in the ARG. I mean, it was never explicitly stated that the ARG being completed would result in Portal 2 being launched early on steam, nor what conditions were to be met for it to happen. For all we know, they are moving that bar manually to throw us a bone for playing the indie games, and in reality it will release 12 hours early, regardless of how hard we grind to make it happen.

All that said, I'm not really pissed off about it. There's far more worthy things to be pissed about. I'm just disappointed.

I heard a bunch of people on SPUF are getting together and sending VALVe HQ a sack of potatoes from Amazon Fresh. Perhaps something OCN could do? Not sure if it's a good idea and I certainly won't push it. I just thought it was funny.

Edit: Hang on a tick. Check the page out, the auxiliary potatoes are going down.

Wow, I had no idea this was such a huge plot. It's so huge, in fact, I don't want to have anything to do with it, I just want my Portal 2 tomorrow.
