It's fairly free roaming. Environments are HUGE, and you can wander around them and approach goals from a lot of different angles. You also have a fair number of story choices. I would check it out, it may be what you're looking for.
Also good are fallout 3/NV, though they aren't as gritty and, frankly, aren't as good as Deus Ex.
Edit: The witcher is really a fantastic game, quite free roaming, lots of mystery to solve, but it's not that
gritty (though when I think of gritty, I think of futuristic settings, not past ones).
Edit: Deus Ex is your game man! I just looked into Omikron some more, it's made by Eidos, the same devs that made Deus Ex. It's also a similar (slightly futuristic) dark and gritty setting. Try Deus Ex, if you don't love it, I'll eat one of my 480s.
