Thread Starter
Okay, so i have an old Dell Optiplex. It has an intel pentium inside. Im wondering if i get a new cpu and motherboard can i reboot it with the same hdd.(wimpy hdd, 20gbs) so like, if i keep everything but the cpu and mobo. will it work fine after switching from intel to amd? or would i need to get drivers, programs, etc. the dell optiplex is pretty old and the hdd is via ide.

Make sure the motherboard you're buying has an IDE connector.

And yes, you would have to reinstall drivers for your motherboard, but not a CPU. (CPU's don't require drivers)

If you do get a new motherboard, best thing to do is probably buy a SATA hard drive too. Less hassle. Also, in all honesty I would reccomend completely wiping the drive and re-installing XP.

your old ram (probably ddr) will not work with ddr2/ddr3 boards

dell likes to use proprietary connectors for the front panel
if you use a different mobo it will be difficult to re-use the front usb/audio/power connectors

would be easier with a new case, also the psu may need to be upgraded

about all you can easily recycle is the hdd and cd (~20-40 value)
may be better off rebuilding the entire system

I wouldn't think its worth dumping any money into honestly. If its the data you're after, pull the hard drive out and find somebody/somewhere that can help you pull it. I'm not sure on this, but I would assume you could take it up to Best Buy and ask them to get data off of it if it came to that.

Or just buy a docking station, they're only like $20

Good idea too, though it would end up being about double that time you bought a dock that supports IDE. This is the only one I could find on the egg.

wont be pretty, since you need to string some molex connecters outside the case
