Then I'd suggest taking a gtx 580,and if he has a good PSU (quality 800w +) he can add one more when the prices drop to increase perfomance.

this has been asked like 1000x times...

What resolution does he use? What games does he play?

If hes looking for the most bang for his buck at $500 dollars, and he is "computer inclined," he buys a pair of 6950s, and unlocks them to 6970s with a firmware flash, and your looking at 6970 CF for less than a single 580.

Otherwise, I would suggest for dual cards, 560 SLI, for single card, GTX 580.

Of course this is all assuming he has a 650W+ PSU of decent quality and his motherboard supports SLI/CF. Also a solid OC on a decent CPU would almost be necessary to not bottleneck these set ups.

Why are you listening to him? I posted some performance comparisons earlier, just look at it, it's evidence of what your friend should purchase, Get a GTX570 or GTX580 if you have the right power supply, butm nVidia is definantly the way to go in the high end department..

Those comparisons are moot in my opinion. The 6970 was priced and designed to take on the 570, not the 580. I mean, just look at the price difference between the two.

OP: I would get either a 570 or a 6950 and unlock it to a 6970.

Agree with this. For $500, you can do 6950 CF which will be the best bang for the buck performance. Single card, for now, I am a AMD fan (just switched over to red side) and will recommend 6970. The 580 is way too expensive for not a whole lot performance over 6970 - he can put the money he saves to other good use. And I like the 2 GB memory of the 6970 over the 570 - not to mention OC headroom.

Well from what you've posted to stay on the OP question between GTX 580 or AMD 6970.....

GTX 580 is the best single gpu out currently for $499. Currently being sold for $470 on Newegg with $30 rebate.

GTX 580 1.5Gb is faster than an AMD 6970 2.0Gb and faster than one AMD 6950 2Gb with a flash bios. Even at higher resolution unless he's got more than one monitor and over 1920x1080p resolution. The AMD 6970 is about $120 less however. Both will carry him for the next 2 years in high end gaming with the GTX 580 doing better. In a lot of the benchmarks it's more than marginal lead for the GTX 580 btw.

In the video he says GTX 580 has high heat, high power consumption but it's actually lower than the GTX 480 heat and power consumption but vs the AMD 6970 he's correct. He did forget to mention two things. GTX 580 offers 3D Vision and Physx where the AMD 6970 offers Eyefinity with multple monitor set ups with higher resolution than 1920x1080p as their strengths.

I'm assuming that if those were the two choices your friend is looking at he would have the power supply and case to be able to support either card. Good luck and post back what your friend decided.
