DSLR under 300?

Thread Starter
Hello Camera forum! I've never stepped in here, so I appreciate the help.

Well, I'm looking for a DSLR, preferably around 300 bucks. Laugh? No, don't, cos I'm not looking for brand new. It can be a few years old, I'm basically just looking for something that can give me some good case mod photos.

I've used Nikon and Canon in the past, but any suggestions won't be overlooked. Just need a good all-around lens and that's about it.

Thanks for your help!

I can't help suggest, but I'll give you a bump.

I think you'd best look for a high quality digital camera rather than a DSLR.

Just a suggestion, the DSLR price bracket is a fair chunk above what you're looking to pay.

You'll have to get something fairly old, but $300 is doable. Look for a Canon XT, or XTi, or a Nikon D40/D40x.

You're definitely going to have to buy used here. It might be worth checking the FS section of forums like FM and POTN.

At that price, you're probably looking at the Canon Rebel XT, 20D, 30D, or the Nikon D40, D40x with the kit 18-55mm lens.

Good luck with this search.

I think at that price and goal, you'd be better getting a high end ps.

Couple points... there is no such thing as an "all-around" lens. There are lenses that you keep on your camera more because they fit your subject matter and/or style of shooting, but no lens really fits the role of all-around.

Anyway you pretty much have 3 lens choices if going canon. Old kit lens, 50mm 1.8, or cheap/used 3rd party lens. You need to figure $50-150 minimum here. You want a lens that is sharp and a decent macro lens for your application. Sadly I don't think either of those fits both criteria. The 50mm is not a macro lens, and while the old kit does technically have macro capabilities, it is no better suited then a cheap ps and less sharp then some good ps lenses.

Body I would recommend the cheapest digital one you can find. Any in the canon line up will do the job, including the original rebel. est. $150.

...Then you will want some sort of lighting for the shots. You can get away with 15-30 bucks buying any old lights from the hardware store--forget about strobes/speedlights in your budget.

So, I'd look into ps because you only can afford 1 lens with your budget and thats basically the limitation to a ps. And it will be a nice camera to have for all sorts of other stuff that won't take up a bunch of space.

My 2c.

D40, D50, or D70 + 18-55 VR would do nicely here. All about the same in performance.

Thank you for the suggestions. +Rep to all.

Like I said I'm looking for used. Infact, I think the Canon I used WAS the XT years ago. I know DSLR's START at about 650 new on the low end, so used is something I'd go for especially since photography won't be my passion or focus, just doing good pics for casemods.

Again, thank you all, I'll look into the above.

Not necessarily. You can grab a refurbished Rebel XS with 18-55mm IS lens from Canon for $400.

i picked up my sony a200 new for $215 and later an olympus e420 for $230 so you might still be able to pick up new cameras if you just keep an eye out for htem when they go EOL.
