ULtra X3 Dies too soon

Thread Starter
My x3 ultra 1000watt psu dies after 8 months of use!? I had it mounted upside down so the air flow would go through the top of the case and not go back down onto the cpu cooler, After having it mounted like this for roughly 8 months the x3 unit died! I got a replacement and am now using it right-side up. Could me using the psu upside-down before be an reason as to why it died? ...or did I simply have a faulty unit? Thanks

The psu draws air IN through the fan, its exhausted out the back where the switch is.

So if you had it at the top of the case you could have been restricting its airflow pretty badly.

PSUs don't care what direction they're facing. I think some fans don't like to be diagonal, but that's irrelevant in your case.
It's entirely possible your unit just up and died, first of all that can happen to any PSU, even the highest quality ones, and then Ultra units aren't that great to begin with.

But yeah, like the other person said, your PSU's fan is an intake, it sucks air from outside the PSU to blow it on its internals and out the back.

What would you suggest for PSU's? OCZ??? Ive heard theyre good... I also heard ultra was really 'bad-ass' when i got it... they price their units as though they are at least lol...

Doubt your psu orientation played a role in it's untimely death. If it makes you feel better, I had an Ultra X3 800 watt die on me too after a few months of use. However, it's replacement (same make and model) has been alive and kicking for close to 2 years now...and it's been in all kinds of orientations (on its side, upside down, and right side up).

NOT OCZ, try to find an Antec, Corsair, Seasonic you really cant go wrong with those.

Figure out a price range that you can work with and read up one the ones here.

Looks like we have found the answer. Seriously, don't buy Ultra PSUs. They're junk.

The X3 series were pretty good.

X4 are mediocre though, and the X2 and LSP series are just trash.

However, even though the X3 series were good for their time, they're pretty dated by this point. They have relatively anemic +12V ratings by modern standards, and efficiency is pretty meh. Electrical performance is nothing to get excited over either. If you paid a premium for an X3, you wasted your money.

My X3 1000 has been going steady for about 2.5 years now..I guess it is the luck of the draw.

Enjoy the fresh RMA
