My gripe over PC Games

Thread Starter
WTH is happening lately, I had a look at my local EB Games store and it seemed anything worth a look needed some 3rd Party Program Ie Gamespy/Steam for online play.. Lets not forget the Internet Activations aswell..

Why do we need all these programs just to play the game? I took back Black Ops for this very reason. I spent 2 Hours and wasted 3GB on downloading Programs, Updates, random S%^ just to play it and turns out to be a Mediocre at best game -.-

Why can't games be more like BFBC2 as an example, I got it up and running within Half an hour when I first got it, extremely simple. Same with GTA4 and same with Far Cry 2...

Seems they just line there pockets and dont give a ^@$# anymore.

Why even shop locally, why not just download steam and shop on there? They have fantastic deals, and often significantly lower prices (plus cloud game saving options, ect.) I hate having to insert the disk every time I want to play a game, Steam FTW!

Software stores are a thing of the past. Get used to Steam, EA DLM, etc.

Because more and more game developers are shifting towards ways to purchase and download games digitally, rather than to go and buy them at a store. You're in the minority here. Steam is a fantastic platform which like appleg stated, tends to have much better deals online than in stores.

I think i would say the best DRM so far is the one EA have in BFBC2/MOH2010

You can just install the game via online, dont need cd to play, You do have 10 activation limits which is fine But they actually bundle a revoke tool in there!!!11 and its completely simple, No need for a client

I personally prefer hard copies as well. If I can I'll go out of my way to try and find a retail nearby with the games I'm looking for. I just can't get over the nice feeling of picking up a case off the shelf, opening it, spinning the physical disk in my hand and slapping it in the computer drive :]

EDIT: I'd like to say I also do not mind Steam. It's a pretty nifty and quite useful service and I enjoy it, however personally physical copies is my main choice otherwise Steam it.

And I personally did not enjoy black ops so your better off with out it me thinks anyway.

I downloaded and installed Black Ops in less than 2 hours--if you're having that hard of a time with it, there is something else going on (I'm not saying that it isn't a sucky game, but it doesn't take that much effort to get it running).

I would say that whatever way Steam implements DRM for their supported games is the least-obtrusive method I've ever experienced because I simply don't even know it's doing anything, and I personally have no gripes about it running. I think DRM problems are entirely overblown these days.

You can't get away from digital dispersion of games/media, and personally I'm happy to spare the earth of producing one more hard CD/DVD that will eventually go into a landfill somewhere.

Ah, yes, BFBC2. The only mainstream game that is so poorly coded it still C2D's or hard locks computers to this day. And GTA4 was so poorly ported from 360 that it takes ridiculous CPU power to run right. And FC2 most people dismissed as crap. Any reason why the three shining examples of PC games you chose all had gamebreaking flaws?
