update! going 1680x1050@ 120hz to 1080@ 120hz results

currently running a viewsonic vw2268m and just got a acer gd235hz

i'm loving the 120hz refresh and vsynced 120fps while gaming,

i'm concerned about performance loss in going to a higher resolution, but from what i also know , most games are now commonly supporting 16:9

does any one know how much of a performance loss i may/might have when going to 1080? , because if i can't push out 120hz on most of the games i play it might not be worth it at all to upgrade

mafia 2 seems to be a terrible coded game
1680*1050 high settings physx off vsync : 110 fps (lower than 1080p fps)
1920*1080 high settings physx off vsync: 125 fps

dragon age:
1680*1050 very high settings , no AA, af 16x , all other options on :86fps
1920*1080 very high settings, no AA, AF 16x, all other options on 73fps

Metro 2033 1680*1050
Total Frames: 7615, Total Time: 59.88506 sec
Average Framerate: 127.26
Max. Framerate: 271.15 (Frame: 7508)
Min. Framerate: 6.94 (Frame: 52)

metro 2033 1920x1080
•Total Frames: 5366, Total Time: 59.88774 sec
•Average Framerate: 89.70
•Max. Framerate: 341.53 (Frame: 5179)
•Min. Framerate: 9.08 (Frame: 14)

You will see a sharper image due to more pixels and reduced jagged edges.

yeah as soon as the acer comes in this thursday , i'll have comparison shots,

i'll also try to do benches on both resolutions with screenshots,

i have metro2033, just cause 2, mafia 2 ,

i'm actually curious about how much fps so , i guess i'll delve into it and post my findings , when it comes in the mail in two days

Not really. That all depends on size and distance. The vertical resolution, which desides how many pixels take in games, is roughly the same in both monitors. He will simply gain more field of view on the sides.

If it looks considerably better, it's not resolution that makes it like that. It might have better panel quality. If it looks worse, switch the roles in the last statement.

GTX 470 SLI is going to be more than fine at 1920x1080, even 1x of them would be good enough for most games out there smile.gif
(TBH you were massive-overkilling it for 1680x1050)

Nope. To run 1920x1080 at 120FPS to utilize 120hz, it takes as much GPU power as it takes to run 2560x1600 at 60FPS

That's only if you want to run at 120FPS for everything no?
Having that expectation is a bit lofty IMO...

Well kind of. But if you want 120FPS in the most recent multiplayer FPS games, you pretty much need two of those.

You might want 120FPS for shooters

But of course you don't need it for singleplayer games. The performance increase there is just a positive side effect.

thats a good reference,

and yes i do enjoy 120fps with most of my games and the high fps is worth maintaining especially when vsyncd

try getting dips from 60fps to 40fps and compare it from 120fps diping down to 100 fps, the latter of which is close near unnoticeable, it ensures a pleasant gaming experience with no framerate lag,
where getting 60-40fps, you get annoyed on the choppiness

i don't care about 3d vision, but my main gripe is playing 120fps at most if not all games i plan to play ,

i barely pull out 80fps average on mafia 2, so it'll be interesting to see how it does @1080 instead of 1680x1050

once you go to a 120hz monitor, you tend to like it too much,
some people won't notice the difference, some people will, you have to have one to appreciate the difference, try putting one side by side on a 60hz lcd, and game between the two , you'll never go back

I would only upgrade to 1080 if it was a monitor that is significantly larger than your current one. That is when you will notice the difference.
