They are not giving up on Java, they will make it proprietary, lock it down and sue everyone who tries to use a different version.

This is Oracle we are talking about after all.

yeah if you or your buddy paid for Open Office, you got scammed big time, as it remained free even after the oracle acquisition of sun...

which is strange to be honest, as oracle at first was one of the first large corporations to support Open Source...hopefully they don't go to far with it and keep it the way it is, i'm more worried about mysql than i am java

Yes, several companies are worried about the fate of mysql. Oracle had wanted to kill it since it competes with their database. I can't really see that happening but several people I know that got riffed when Oracle bought Sun were working on mysql and they expect it to be killed or at least forked to a proprietary license with custom code. Time will tell. There have been many developers involved with mysql that are making their voices heard concerning the future of the product.

yeah i've been following carefully, so far they haven't done much, but i'm always worried now i've been using mysql for long time, would hate to have to switch

i've heard good things about MongoDB, so i guess i will start learning that as well just in case

I hope that Libreoffice borrows parts of the Lotus Symphony UI (the current IBM Lotus is based on Openoffice).

Yuck. And keep producing documents that aren't standard and thus won't work properly on alternative office suites.

No offense really, but I think a lot of people don't think about the cons of using such an proprietary office suite, that intentionally tries to destroy all open and free competitors.

Admittedly some projects need MS Office, but I wouldn't be too proud of using it if I had the choice.
