I cannot remember what her exact complaints were, but I know she and everyone else hated it because of compatibility issues with nearly every client the law firm had.
I don't remember very well, but every time i save a doc file in 97-03 format it worked fine in libre, though to be honest I almost always use ODF files (which work in MS office 2007 IIRC). You're right however that it's libre's/OOo's fault if they don't support the format.

When was this, a few years ago or this year? OOo was not very good in terms of compatibility years ago but has gotten much better lately.
Most of these problems would be solved if MS defaulted to ODF, but that isn't going to happen over night(or ever probably)

I know a law firm in Buffalo who has tried to switch solely to OOo. I've spoken with a friend there before about how that transition had gone for them, being that this was the first major business I had heard of making such a switch and it would be kinda cool to find out.

I cannot remember what her exact complaints were, but I know she and everyone else hated it because of compatibility issues with nearly every client the law firm had.

I'll do some digging myself between Libre and MSO, and I'm sure I'll find a few things for you.

Oh, and if you italicize something that's been quoted, no one will ever know because quotes become italicized.
That was my first attempt at using the italics option. Why does bold work that way but not italics?

But the thing is most people don't. I still am surrounded by people who don't know you can change it to saving into a DOC instead.

The reason I think Calc "isn't on the same level" is because of the lack of American addon/extensions for it (found plenty in Spanish and other languages). I was trying to prove to my MBA sister that you could do the same things she needed and she kept talking about an addon (she didn't know it was) that did some fancy financial analysis for a person without them having to do much. I ended up being able to reproduce most without the addon but I will concede it was beyond the average office drones level of interest, time, or knowledge.

The problem for your friend and her company was probably the same problem she would have had with a switch from XP to Vista(which is 7) or from MSO2000/2003 to 2007; it wasn't exactly the same. And those incompatibilities were likely the other people thinking they couldn't open or read .odt files (I love hearing that excuse). They would likely have been the same if both companies weren't using MSO2007 or later. I still laugh when I get a docx file. At least there's google to convert those without losing the first and last page. That's been the big problem with OOo and Libre for me.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses like everything else. But I think the big thing is that people are just too lazy and too afraid of change to bother with anything but the status quo.

So what about people using Office 15 who create DOCX files that won't open in Office 2007, or can't be edited in 2010? What will you tell them to do, save in 2007 format? Microsoft has a new format every few years it seems. If they just stuck to ODF we would have zero problems because everything (except MS Office at the moment) supports it. It does everything that OOXML does, except that it actually works! It's also a far, far simpler format.

Calc is slow. That is why it's not on the same level. It is pathetic at redrawing graphs.

I don't know where you've been, but Office supports OpenDocumentFormat (.odt) with no issues

I do enjoy using Office 2010 though, It kept all my footnotes and Chicago style formatting straight through all the revisions of a paper I just finished. I know its pricey, but with a student discount it was totally worth it.

Incorrect. Office (at least 2007, I'm not sure about 2010 actually), as of SP2, supports a botched version of the standard with some tweaks to break compatibility. Microsoft doesn't conform to standards, it reinvents them.

If one uses a spreadsheet program, one should use gnumeric. It is by far the best spreadsheet program available. It isn't 100% compatible with excel any more though... It fixed some of excel's bugs.
