Dude, the 3.4 GHz will do FINE in modern games. It does not bottleneck your GPU at all.
If you want better performance in games, there hardly is any need to overclock. Buy a second GPU if you need better FPS. Then it may be sufficient to overclock your CPU.

should say so on the box (seriel number?). i got the 955 recently (2 weeks ago). you can get a modest bump to at least 3.8 no problem on stock cooling. but get a better cooler and some quality thermal paste (as5, ultra, IC7, etc)

no matter what, until you upgrade your gfx card, your bottleneck will be the gpu, so it you overclock and dont see some drastic improvement, you know why.

the cpu at stock clock is way more than enough for anything right now, remember, you have 4 cores at that speed, not 2.

Download CPU-Z. It will show you your CPU stepping (C3 or C2)

You are right about that, he would see a lot more benefit from a second gpu. But there is nothing wrong with him wanting to overclock.

If you are new to overclocking, there is a lot to learn and this is a good place to start. There are several guides on overclocking Phenom IIs on this forum and many others.

This is a good place to start. Make sure you do your research first, you dont want to damage your hardware

All true.
I was merely trying to state that even with overclocking, his CPU will do fine in games.

With a 965 you are good for gaming...just get yourself a better GPU or add a second gpu in crossfire, instead of overclocking the cpu freq, overclock the RAM and CPU-NB....there is a thread around here where the guy gets like 10-15 fps just by overclocking the CPU-NB, and you will get a better "real world" zippy feel about your system.
