Wireles Upgrade for Hotel

Thread Starter
Right. My boss has tasked me with finding wireless routers to replace the ones we have for the hotel. Heres a little info on the hotel.

3 incoming T1 lines for entire hotel access
about 100 rooms
3 stories
Interior walls have aluminum studding mixed in with concrete supports
We currently have 5 wireless routers setup in and "X" style pattern

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

As of right now the routers are all working, but when a guest enters their room signal drops to pretty much nothing. We have had techs come out and say that the signal is fine but our guests say otherwise. I have had guests tell me that they are getting better signal from the hotel thats 50 yards away that from our own routers. This is a problem. Can anyone suggest good high powered routers? I know that not every guest is going to be accesing our entire network all at the same time but the routers should be able to handle about 20 users each. Just to be safe in our summer months

You really need to convince your employer to initiate a RF-Wireless site survey from a reputable consultant so you can adequately deploy the 'correct' antenna types and AP placement in that building. Normal wi-fi dipole antennas probably aren't going to cut it.

I would take a guess that users on Floor 2 has the least signal. If the pic you displayed depics the layout of most hotels. You will most likely need Cisco Aironet Access points along with Cisco 2100 Series Wireless LAN Controller, Wired to All 3 floors then wireless on each floor.

A site survey would still be recommended if you do not have the skills, also you may need to bring in a Network Engineer temporarily to help design this out for you.

If you want you can PM me.

As others have said, you really need to get a wireless survey done. If you want to look at some stuff yourself, look at section 5-A for tools.

Well like stated in my OP there 3 T1 lines coming into the hotel. One for each floor. And actually the 2nd floor should also be able to pick signal from the 1st or 3rd floor. At least thats in theory. I don't know whats there now. But I randomly checked a few rooms the other night and sure enough. as soon as the guest room door closes signal drops drastically. I will have to get with the boss and tell him that he needs to have a site survey done.

One large misconception is how the standard dipole antenna radiate radio frequency. It's very, very weak on the vertical plain. Your hotel if done 'correctly' is looking at upwards of $20k for proper equipment and configuration. Your employer should way the cost of just running Ethernet (probably cheaper) and implementing a secure switched network..
