6950 unlocked vs 6950 overclocked???? - Page 2

Thread Starter
thanks for the consideration kung pow, but i understood perfectly
I am leaning towards the 1gb for 2 reason

Even if I did get the 2gb version I wouldnt unlock it, with that in mind. If I got the 1gb version with the max stable OC I could get pretty close if not even with 6970 performance, which is my ultimate goal. the other reason I think I'll get the 1gb is because I find it hard to justify an extra $40 after MIR for a 2-5% performance difference between an overclocked 6950

If you are not willing to engage the unlock which is actually supported by me because I too think a healthy oc can compensate the provided performance of the unlock, you will be fine with the 1 GB version
And the fact that we do not know what the long term affects are and that the warranty will be voided if mailfunction occurs is another factor to it.

Cool to see a price and hardware safety conscious guy

So in your case there is no better bang for the buck than the 6950 1GB.
Now the brand you will choose is going to be important and majorly decisive upon how high you will be able to overclock.

Out of my experience , user reviews and owner documented reports the best overclocking ability is provided by MSI , ASUS and Sapphire due to the first two´s specially designed voltage controller and structurly enhanced architecture for more efficient overclocking.

The best warranty, package features are provided by Gigabyte and HIS....most cables , adapters and warranty/RMA capabilities.

Cooling won´t be an issue since you want a reference card.

I personally would recommend either ASUS or MSI to yield a +1 GHZ core overclock without any instabilites and heat issues.
They still put the standard adapters in their packaging with a CF bridge ..ASUS RMA is hardass ...but MSI is fair and alright
Also Warranty can be extended if you register at MIS I believe

You will have a lot of fun ahd extreme performance
And yes you will definately reach 6970 performance and I can confidently say that you will even exceed it!

Have fun and good luck

Answered a lot of questions for me. I just ordered the HIS hd6950 today from newegg. How would I know if this was pre-March 15 batch?

Send newegg an e-mail asking them when the card arrived.
But retailers are already aware of why people want to know when the product has arrived in order to determine if it is unlockable.

So they might consider this information classified possibly instructed by AMD to do so.

But I can tell you with 99% confidence that 6950´s being sold on newegg are before 15th march batches so don´t worry

+rep right back at ya

I wanna get 2x MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III myself that is why I have gathered so much information about the 6950 that I can confidently form an expert oppinon on it

Trust me you are getting serious performance bang for the buck.
Some overclocking and you got yourself a potential 6970

Have fun with your card!
