Noob question and sorry for hijacking the thread, but what's wrong with the Marvel chip?

Most people using the Marvell SATA Controller ports on most of the Asus X58 boards seem to have problems getting a hard drive stable. It seems that if you were trying to boot from the Marvell ports it was even worse.

Some people did not have a problem, but a lot more did!

What's wrong with the Marvell controller..

Attachment 213633

C300 on an Asus U3S6 pcie card

The other thing is that you shouldn't worry about sequential read speeds. Access time and 4K writes are the important numbers

The marvell 9128 controller, which most x58 boards use, uses only one PCIe lane to transfer data. So there is a terrible bottle neck. Using my Vertex3 SSD on the Marvell SATA3 controller, i only got about 400mb/s transfer rate. Should be about 550mb/s, but my system was very unstable. Would stutter, freeze and lock up. I gave up on the Marvell controll and now run my Vertex3 on the Intel (SATA2) controller. I only get about 285mb/s transfer rate but the access time is great (which is what really counts) and I have no problems with the system.
Some newer x58 boards use the Marvell 9182 controller, which uses two PCIe lanes. I've heard mixed reviews on this controller. Better transfer rate, but still not where it should be.
for a RAID card I've heard good results with the LSI Mega RAID 9240-4i check it out here but it's about $200, which is still cheaper than a new mobo, chip & OS.

not SATA 3, therefore providing worse transfer speeds than the Marvel... However, again the transfer speeds do not matter as much a random read/write...

My bad, I read the Sata 3.0Gb/s as Sata III. Though I wonder what the experiences are with that LSI 9240-4i
