Graphics card running really hot

Thread Starter
I have a BFG 9800 GT (sig rig) and it ALWAYS runs hot...idle is 62/63C, heavy gaming=79C...I know this isn't a dangerous temp for a graphics chip but the idle seems really high. Is it cause of the stock cooler? The fan speed is sitting around 50% Should i reapply some thermal paste or something?

I was looking at getting a new graphics card soon anyways (been thinking about it for a long time) Cause i'm pretty sure when I'm gaming, the graphics card is the bottleneck. What is the best graphics card I could upgrade that would barely bottleneck my CPU? E8400

Try reapplying the thermal paste, it should help some. You could also manually turn up the fan speed.

What programs do you use to manually set the fan speed?

Those series card's were built to run hot, this means they will run hot. Like a couple of other's said, re-apply some new compound. Brush of the old stuff with some strong solvent. Make sure the copper plate is clean, then whack some MX-4/3 or OCZ Freeze on the chip.

I have some Arctic Silver I just got...Even if I do that and it still runs hot, can I overclock it some? Like maybe 625/1000/1700?
Edit: Okay, point taken

If thats the single slot version then my 9800 OC ran about the same temps, I would not worry much if thats the case, Do make sure you have good airflow too like a fan cliped on the back of the hdd case helps quite a bit.

Try using RivaTuner.

You can control your fan speeds with it.

Works great if you can't install the nForce drivers.
