From 5850 to 6950, worth the money?

Thread Starter
Currently i am using a MSI 5850, overclocked to 950/1250.
At this moment i am playing on 1680x1050 but i am seriously considering getting a new monitor in summer so i can play on 1080p.

I have been looking into some affordable GPU's and got my eyes on a 6950 which would perfectly fit my ~250$ budget, i cant sell my current 5850 as i will put it in my gf's rig.

How big of a step is it to go from a 950/1250 AMD-5850 to a 6950? on a 1680x1050 resolution now and a 1940x1080 later?

If you decide to get the 6950, you can unlock the shaders and overclock it to match a 6970. Good luck!

What games are you playing? After my 5850, I have had a 5870, 480, 480 SLI, and now 580 and honestly, since my 5850 I haven't noticed any improvements in games. Sure, I get more FPS but I wasn't hurting for it beforehand. I only upgraded for rendering. I'd recommend waiting for at least one more generation of cards.

Been reading into that, interesting. Bit of the same situation we had with the 5850 (the one i own now) and the more expensive 5870, very easy to run a 5850 on same clockspeeds as a 5870.

But the one that got my attention was the MSI HD6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition, though i have been reading lots of different things about being able to unlock the card or not.

Currently playing: RIFT, Bad Company II, Crysis II, NFS Shift II and looking forward to Battlefield III

I am still using an NVIDIA 250GTS, and can't complain. Once BF3 comes out though, prices will drop on older generation cards, and I plan on picking up a 6950 when that time comes.

Rift runs horribly on AMD cards, but judging from recent news, it will be fixed.

It will be a pretty good update, but not sure if it's worth it.

You would be smarter to get another 5850. For value and overall performance. Plus the next refresh is said to be like going from a 4850 to the 5850

Assuming you have the space on your MB, this is a great option.

Yes the 5XXX series scale well, if your mobo supports CrossfireX I'd recommend it.
5850's aren't going to break your wallet anymore either.

Its getting the software tuned thats the real fun.

Good point about the Xfire, i do have a mainboard that supports 8x8 PCI-E. However i "only" have a 600W Thermaltake PSU right now, and if i'm right it only has 2x 6pin PCI-E connectors.

Another option would be getting a 1080p monitor right now instead of the summer, and getting a new card in the summer instead. Would a 950/1250 AMD5850 run nicely on a 1920x1080 resolution in the games i mentioned?
