SSD As Boot: Should I get put 2 or more HDDs in Raid 0?

Thread Starter
I just bought a 64 GB SSD yesterday for my main drive on my new rig. My PC is SATA III. I'm now gonna pick up some HDDs for normal use and storage. I was gonna go 2 1.5TB Caviar Black 6GB on Newegg cause they're on sale and the 3TB Caviar Green 3GB, both Internal, for Backup.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-793-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-764-_-Product

I'm now wondering if it's worth putting 2 or more HDs in raid 0 for increased speed. All my programs are gonna be on the HDDs. Would I feel any speed increase though I'm already using a SSD for Windows? And if so, which brand should I go with? I'm hearing some bad thing about the Blacks failing in raid. But I have the money for it so if it's faster, I'd like it. Right now my 7200 is slow as molasses and I don't want slow speed! I'm not sure if it's conflict or what. My PC gets sluggish after being for a few hours and I gotta restart it. This rig is only 6 months old.

1. Are the raid 0 worth it with the single SSD as boot? If so, how many drives and what brand. I'm looking for about 3TBs.

2. How do those HDs sound. Anything better/more reliable? Can the Blacks go in raid?

I'm aware of the risks of failure with RAID. These drives come with a 3 year and a 5 year warranty.

Thanks.

I use raid 0 for OS, strorage, Programs, Work, Music and all that good stuff. I then use the SSD seperate to put my games on. I also use a external hard drive for further storage. I have also short stroke my raid 0 from 1TB effective to 100GB. This had dramaitcally increased speeds. Hope this is useful and good luck

Add these to your list. They are designed for enterprise reliability and RAID. I am running 3 of them in a home server 24/7 in RAID 5. They do run hot though so make sure you have good cooling.

I am finding that if performance is your main concern, forget about Raid 0. Just buy SSD drives. They outpace most HDD RAID 0 configs so much that its not even worth it.

1. Really depends on what you are storing on your non boot drives. On my gaming machine I run everything off my SSD drives so they start up faster and i get usually get the map loaded faster than everyone else. if i was storing all my family photos on SSDs i think that would be a waste of money. I use a dedicated home server with HDDs in RAID 5 for that.

2. Blacks can go in RAID just fine, the RE4s are more reliable though.

I just want my SSD for Windows right now. If I want it for games I'll buy a 128GB when it's on sale.

I need massive storage for stuff from my family; At least 3TBs. I also play a lot of games and listen to music and watch avi movies so speed is my friend.

3 of those RE4 cost $360 while 3 Spinpoints with warranties cost $245.94.

Is it worth the difference? Spinpoints seem really reliable.

http://www.newegg.com/Shopping/Shopp...82E16822152185

I found this on a review of the RE4:

Quote:
Other Thoughts: MUST USE IN "RAID" ONLY (Raid1, 5, 10, but avoid Raid0) if your goal is reliability. Do NOT use in desktops as a stand-alone harddrive, b/c Enterprise/RAID edition storage like this one, have TLER setting enabled in firmware. Users cannot disable it, and it is meant strictly for RAID. Using this drive standalone limits error-recovery, for that you woul duse WD Black, Blue, etc not this RE4 model RE4 is for RAID only (TWO DRIVES AT LEAST)..
So what?
i have two RE4's in RAID0 for my boot drive and data. They are very fast, reliable and quite. They also can be used alone in a non RAID mode. TLER allows the drive time to repair itself when an error occurs, while other drives will just be removed from the array. This would be a disaster in a RAID0 array, so you want TLER for RAID. Always use a back up drive when using a RAID0 array.

Are you using the SATA3 (6GB) ports for your drives now? What controller do you have them on? The Marvell controller is no good and you should use the Intel Rapid Storage contoller instead. This could be your problem to begin with.

Actually, I just ordered it yesterday. The SSD, everything. It hasn't come on in yet. The HDs I'm gonna order soon. It has 6 SATA III ports, 1 SATA II. What kind of controller does it have?

ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

How would you compare the RAID RE4s to a 7200 HD alone? Would I feel the speed increase after booting on my SATA III SSD (which is really fast.)? Is it worth it? If it is, should I add 3 or 4? Again, I'm gonna be using the 7200 HDs for all my programs and games and music and such.

According to WD, the newer drives don't support the WDTLER tool "supposedly". I'd search it out (it is still out there), and give it a whirl. I'd guess it does work still (it did on my old WD 640Gb Blacks), they'd just rather sell you the more expensive RE drives.

If it doesn't, no big loss. Otoh, if it still does work...be kind enough to post about it.

TLER is the only difference between the top of the line Black & the Black RE drives (or it used to be, I've not been keeping up with the new WD's lately).

Mech. drives are no way as fast as SSD. I have two in RAID0 and they are twice as fast as a single mech drive. If your going to use a RAID0 setup for data you MUST back it up onto a single drive or on-line, etc.
There's a huge differance between the WD Balcks and the RE4 drives. It's not just the TLER support.

Hmmm....well, looking at the specs. Aside from TLER support *and one small difference of dual actuators on the RE*. The specs are exactly the same.
