Keep GTX 460 SLI or should I sell and get a 570?

Thread Starter
How does the GTX 460 in SLI compare to the GTX 570 and 580? I don't plan on upgrading to a 580 but if a 570 is worth while, I might make a switch. The 460s are doing fine and work well. Thing is, I think they're overkill right now. Two cards heating up my case (temps are okay but summer is coming soon), and games barely take advantage of the extra power. There's what, Crysis? Metro 2033 and... (not playing multiplayer games right now). Plus, even though SLI is working well for me on more modern games, I've a feeling it'll fail me in upcoming less than optimized-well games.

So should I snag a 570 now or would it be better to wait for the 600 series? Any idea when the 600 series will be released?

GTX 460 SLI will beat a 570. Or you could sell the 460 and buy a good solid GTX 580 for a huge boost in peformance compared to your single 460.

The 580. Or GTX 560 SLi.
Best guess on the 600 series (more or less just the 680 to start) is November at the earliest.

460 SLI and 570s are roughly equal. Both match a 480 at stock and overclock past a stock 580. A 580 when overclocked dominates both setups though.

Get a DCII or TFIII if you go with a 570, great redesigned PCB with amazing coolers. The DCII cooler doesn't need 40% fan speed to keep the chip under 80C, and with 60% fan speed, it won't pass 65C in most cases. Can't really say much about the TFIII cooling yet, not many reviews. Both should hit 900+ core rather easily, which is past the 850 core needed to match a 580.

BFBC2 @ 1920x1200

460 SLI: 62 FPS
570: 56 FPS
580: 67 FPS

Far Cry 2 @ 1920x1200

460 SLI: 105 FPS
570: 85 FPS
580: 104 FPS

Metro 2033 @ 1920x1200

460 SLI: 26 FPS
570: 27 FPS
580: 33 FPS

Dawn of Discovery @ 1920x1200

460 SLI: 93 FPS
570: 74 FPS
580: 86 FPS

Now these are all for the 768MB 460's so yours should be slightly higher. Anyway I would keep what you have now because its largely more powerful than a single 570 and will come close to a 580 in almost every case. Also given the tendency of many of the 570's to burn up you're better off saving your money for the 6xx series in a year or so.

Okay, maybe I'll wait until the 600 series; specifically the 670 (or more powerful 570 equivelent). Don't feel like dropping $500+ on the 580 right now. Thanks for the detailed replies.

Keep your 460s and wait for kepler.

2 460s 1GB SLI beat (by a very small amount, but still beat) 580 most of the time at 1920x1080 and under.

If you experience some SLI troubles like micro-stuttering or drivers (which I guess not) then you may consider going for single card setup.

Definitely the second 460, those cards are powerhouses if tuned right. Heck there strong stock!
Dude already has the 2nd 460 guys

He's talking about selling the two of them to get a 570.

460's 1GB in SLI are easily faster than the 570/480 and even slightly edge out the 580 most of the time. This is speaking of single-monitor setups. Once the res goes up beyond 30", the higher vram cards are likely to pull ahead, depending on the game of course.

Unless you're having SLI-related problems w/your 460's (typically these would be heat/noise, microstutter, or lack of SLI support on games you're playing) you're going to end up spending money for no tangible performance gain if you sell what you have to buy a 570.
