5970+5870 or single 6990?

Thread Starter
I have a eyefinity setup with 3 monitors and would like to upgrade my video card. I don't know if I should buy a 5970 to add to my 5870 for a trifire setup or sell my 5870 and buy a single 6990?

Which would give me the best performance overall? They would both cost me the same I just want the best performance.

Save yourself the hassle and get a good solid 6990. Also better tessealtion and driver support plus less power usage and heat.

Go for the 6990, the 6 series scale a lot better then the 5 and are better at tessellation.

6990 but get aftermarket cooling or wait for a new special cooler version.

The stock cooling sucks.

Just sold my 5970 exactly 2 weeks ago to get a 6990. I think the 6990 runs a lot better. I'm getting a third 24inch monitor in a week, so I have no basis for comparison in terms of Eyefinity, but in terms of driver support, power/heat and even noise I like the 6990 more. My 5970 was loud because it was oc'd but it still wouldn't touch my much quieter stock 6990's performance. I suppose if you OC the 6990 (which I plan to do in a few months once I go to water) it will reach the noise levels that everyone whines about, but at stock mine doesn't go above 47% fan speed after 4+ hours of BFBC2 or a lengthy Furmark session, which makes it barely audible over my case fans. Honestly, I would just get a 6990 instead of adding a 5970 to your setup

Get the 6990, the hardware on the 6 series supports 3d, so you will be very happy with the 6990 once the 3d drivers come out. It's probably more efficient in terms of price as well.

Sell the 5870, Get the 6990 and be happy. No reason to add more old tech and go tri-fire. For me Dual GPu's is the max ill go. No reason to go more unless you have a lot of resolution to cover..

So you are all saying that a single 6990 will out perform a 5970+5870. I couldn't care less for heat or noise. All I want is what setup will give me the best performance with my eyefinity setup and let me make it clear that i will not be buying a second 6990 in the future.

Single 6990 vs 5970+5870(aka 3 X 5870s)
