Was your server worth the $$

SO im thinking. I paid nearly $800 for my server

It runs backups on all of my machines automatically

It keeps my files on the network for easy sharing

It allows me to easily connect to any machine using RDC

It host my FTP server

and i use it to render stuff with 3d Max

I think that i dont the server works hard enough to go the $800 i put into it. (Or at least not yet)

How much did you pay and was it worth it for you?

My Server:

AM2 board: $40
Athlon x2 45w CPU: $25
Antec Earthwatts PSU: $15
2 gigs DDR2: $15
80 gig HDD: Free (pulled from a rebuild for a friend)
2 2 TB HDD: $140 (total)
Antec 300: Free
CPU Cooler: $10

WHS: Technet subscription (got that for Windows 7 and Office 2010, so I say free since it was a bonus I was not expecting).

$245 total

Does what yous does (except rendering and FTP).

But ask yourself, what is the data that is backed up worth?

(Well we also use it to share a printer and to burn DVD etc etc)

Nothing much really. We keep all media (Photos vids ETC ETC) on the server (Used to be network drive)

I do all my school work on my flash drive only because not all PC in school are connect to the WWW.

The backups are only worth the time saved fixing. And yet i haven't had to restore anything in 3 years. and before that never...

Thats why i said. I dont think it has been worth it yet

Who knows because stuff does happen some times.
(I will say i have been VERY lucky. I bought a seagate 7200.9 back in 05 and used it EVERYDAY since and the sucker still runs perfectly. It must have atleast 30,000+ hours on it..)

I originally bought a Sony Vaio laptop for a cousin in a far, far away land, but it turns out that he "damaged" it due to "water-damage". So I got it back about a month ago. Because he didn't want it back, and I had no real use for it, I decided to use it as a server. Considering the extreme low power consumption of a laptop, it was a perfect candidate. For some wierd reason, neither windows 7 nor Ubuntu would work, but Fedora 14 did... flawlessly.

So I installed that and installed Amahi home Server on it. I ran that for about a week or so before realizing that the true potential of this server was not being used. So I looked into runnin g a dedicated minecraft server for my friends and I. That worked beatifully - I have it set to run at startup, and I manage it using the McMyAdmin backend. then about a week or so ago, I reazlied that we don't play minecraft 24/7. So I looked into running a dedicated MW2 server - the AlterIWnet kind. that worked beatifully as well... from inside my network. So currently, I'm just trying to get that to work from outside my network. The laptop is perfect for running headless, and in the rate even that I do need the screen, its right there... genius!

/rant

Anyway, "server" specs:
Core i3 330m - 2.13Ghz
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB HDD (internal) + 2TB esata WD Green drive
All wired with a gigabit Ethernet connection

Total cost - slightly under $700 CAD, when I bought it.

At least mine is future proof... I used to have a dell that some one just gave me, I used it as a server but the slow IDE drive + slow processor + the low ram killed it.

My server cost quite a bit but I'm happy with the results. So far it runs the file server for my media pcs, Hyper V for VMs, iscsi targets for VMs, and deloyment services for VMs and other pcs. It runs fast, cool, and quiet. To me, it was worth it.

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

server.png

(the listed price is not the price I paid since I got more than half the parts on sale for less than the listed prices over the last year)

I needed a video input, it was cheap, uses low power, and very little heat generation.
