Upgrading from E8500

Thread Starter
I am looking to upgrade my current rig but keep much of what I already have. This computer is mainly used for business purposes (I'm a revenue analyst) so processing power is more important than graphics. Here's what I'm currently planning on getting:

Cpu - 2500k ($225)
Mobo - ASRock Extreme4 ($160)
New Case (Want larger) - HAF 932 ($170)
RAM - Please suggest

I would like to use everything else I currently have if it will work (PSU, GPU, HDDs, SSD, and DVD Drives). Will my power supply be sufficient? Will my GPU work with this motherboard until I have more money to upgrade it?

Anything else I am missing or you would suggest?

Thanks.

Power supply would be more than fine. Should be a great build for what you're after. Nice OC on that e8500 btw. Despite what my sig says, I've got mine to 4.2

Also, your GPU will be fine for now.

Thanks for the quick response. What kind of RAM would you suggest? Would I gain anything out of 8 GB or is 4 GB enough?

Will my current HSF work on this new setup or will I need to get a new one?

I highly doubt you'd need 8GB of ram. 4 should be plenty for what I'm assuming you'll be doing. I would recommend these based on the ratings alone. Good price also.

To use your current heatsink with the new board, you'd need this

EDIT: had wrong bracket linked. You need the i5361, not the older i7361.

Found the bracket in stock at PPC

Would this be a good cooler to get? Would I need anything else?

That would be a great cooler, but maybe a little overkill for your needs. Those SB chips are apparently supposed to get to around 5 GHz on air alone. Can't go wrong with those Corsair kits, though, if you feel inclined to drop a little cash on a nice cooler.

Ok, maybe it'll be on my wishlist then. Would I need anything more than that kit of just that? I always thought watercooling was more complicated than that.

How does this RAM look: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231427

Anything else I need or should I go ahead with this order? (2500k, ASRock Extreme4, above RAM, CM HAF 932).

CUSTOM watercooling is much more complicated, but a few companies have began making all in one kits like this that get the job done. Granted, a full loop could cool much better, but for a much higher cost. And no you wouldn't need anything with that kit. It's maintenance-free.

That ram is the same as the pair I linked except for a sticker that says it's designed to work with p67 which doesn't change anything on those particular sticks I'm pretty sure. Either way, go ahead and pick up the p67 ones as their guaranteed to work with your board. Neither pair is on the supported module list from ASRock, but higher clocked versions of the same series are, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

Also just noticed that your board has the offset 775 holes. This means you would be able to move over your current cooler with no addition bracket or anything. Sweet action!

Think you're all set with your order.

You most definitely will. I'm a bit jealous to be honest. I want a SB rig

Try to post pics once you get it up and running!
