Comparison Chart, need help choosing a CPU...

AMD Athlon II X2 240 vs AMD Athlon X2 7850

I'm not worried about getting an AM3 cpu as my board is AM2/AM2+/AM3...
the only help I need is if an L3 cache is good to have... if it is available in your budget.

If you are going to overclock I'd go with the 45nm Athlon II, if you don't plan to overclock it doesn't really matter they're pretty much equal with a slight advantage going to the older chip.

Even without L3, clock for clock, the Athlon II appears to be better than the Kuma in all the benchmarks aside from the synthetic ones, Sorenson, WinRAR and Left 4 Dead (0.4fps difference). Don't be confused by some of the benches with the Kuma seemingly leading. The AnandTech bench has a mix of "Lower is better" and in nearly all of those, Regor is better.

Go for the Athlon II X2 240. Not only does it have equal or on par performance compared to the Athlon X2 7850, it also has lower power consumption and better overclockability.

Go for the Athlon II 240, it has better overclocking headroom, you can easily reach 3.2 ghz

User error

Yeah, unless the older chip is less expensive there is no reason to buy it.

More cache is usually good for a couple hundred mhz performance difference (and that was on Intel CPUs)

Also the newer architectures are almost always better
